Quick Hitter: Owens Visits Rutgers

West Deptford (Westville, N.J.) 2014 running back Gerald Owens was one of the top offensive prospects on campus at today's underclassman visitor event at Rutgers. Owens spent the afternoon at Rutgers to watch a bowl practice and meet with the coaching staff.

West Deptford (Westville, N.J.) 2014 running back Gerald Owens had relationships with the Rutgers program, but saw it take the next step today while visiting for a bowl practice.

Fresh off a state title, Owens made the trip to Piscataway for a junior day event and left with positive impressions of Rutgers.

"Things were great," Owens said. "They informed on their academics and their academic support. They care more about your life after football, like parents do. You really get a family feeling there."

Owens holds five verbal scholarship offers, including Rutgers. He attends the same high school as former Rutgers tailback Kordell Young, who spent six years in the program and freshmen defensive tackle Jamil Pollard.

Watching Rutgers practice for the Russell Athletic Bowl, the passion and intensity stood out, he said.

"Practice went great as well," Owens said. "They practice hard and do it at a fast pace. The energy the players created was crazy. It made me want to practice with them. It looked like they were enjoying it."

Owens also spent time with head coach Kyle Flood.

"Coach Flood is a great coach," he said. "He seems loyal and dedicated."

Owens also holds verbal offers from Boston College, Temple, Wisconsin and South Carolina. He ran for 216 yards and five touchdowns in his team's state final win over Cedar Creek.
