Huskers offer Florida DT

It was a pretty good bet that some offers were going to be extended to defensive lineman in the early part of January and the first ones came today. Kevin Maurice from Orlando (Flor.) Freedom picked up an Nebraska offer and will host the Nebraska defensive coordinator in-home tomorrow.

The Nebraska staff is back out recruiting after their bowl game. Today they were out extending new offers. One of the new offers was given to Kevin Maurice from Orlando (Flor.) Freedom.

"Yes sir, I picked up a Nebraska offer today," Maurice said. "It was a big deal to get their offer. I always watch Nebraska on T.V., they are always on prime time, that really made it a big deal for me."

If Freedom High School is familiar to Nebraska fans right now it's because the Cornhuskers conducted bowl practices at the high school. Smith was unable to make it to any of Nebraska's bowl practices though.

"Nebraska practiced at our school and they wanted me to come out and see them practice, it was pretty short notice though, and I lost the contact information."

Smith doesn't know a lot more about Nebraska beyond what he's seen on television. However, he knows about the program and their tradition. He also knows about the head coach at Nebraska.

"Nebraska is a great program with great tradition," Maurice said. "Head Coach Bo Pelini is a great coach, a defensive minded coach, and he's a players' coach."

Maurice is a three-technique, defensive tackle who has been told that he has good hands and good explosion on the snap. He also said that Freedom predominantly plays a single gap defensive scheme up front.

"I play three-technique. I have been told my strengths are my hands and my explosion. I am quick off of the ball and I use my hands well, aggressively."

Smith has already taken one official visit and has two others set. One of those visits might get bumped though to fit in the visit to Nebraska. There is another visit that could follow the possible date to Nebraska.

"I took an official visit to Boston College in October. I am meeting with the Nebraska defensive coordinator tomorrow for an in-home visit. I will talk about my official visit to Nebraska then.

"I have a visit set up to Wake Forest on the 11th and I also have a visit to Bowling Green on the 18th, but most likely Nebraska is going to push that one back.

"The coach that is at North Carolina State brought up visiting on the 25th and it's not really set yet. The coach that is there now was at NIU and was recruiting me there. I haven't talked to him lately though."

Maurice is looking for an early opportunity to get on the field when it comes to his college decision. The 6-foot-3 and 280-pound Maurice also says that the coaching staff and academics will play into his decision.

"I am looking at early playing time and coach stability as well as academics. I plan on majoring in sociology or communications."
