Nebraska fans will have a Martinez on campus for a little bit longer than they realized.
Just a few minutes into Thursday morning, Big Red Report received confirmation from Casey Martinez that his son Drake, brother to Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez, had committed to the Huskers. The 2013 prospect is currently rated the No. 69 safety in the country according to FOX Sports NEXT.
Martinez is slated to play safety at Nebraska, but is viewed as an athlete who could play multiple positions.
The 6-foot-2, 198-pound prospect racked up 30+ touchdowns last year as a running back for Laguna Beach, running for over 1,500 yards. He was named All-County by the Orange Country Register and was selected to play in the Canyon Coast All-Star Game.
"He's a smooth athlete. He looks like he's got a short neck when he's in his pads, because everything else about him looks like he should be 6-foot-4," said FOX Sports Scouting Director Scott Kennedy, who got to see Martinez in the All-Star contest. "He's got long arms, long legs, long stride, but he looked me right in the eye and I'm 6-foot-2.
"He told me Nebraska likes him at safety and I can see that easily, he's got so much room for growth that he'll be 220 easy by his 3rd year in the program."
In November, Martinez told FOX Sports NEXT that playing with his brother Taylor would not factor into a decision.
"It would be awesome to play with Taylor, but I would only get to play with him for one year so," said Martinez at the time. "I'm not going make my decision for wherever my brothers at. I'm just going to make a decision on where I think its best for me."
Big Red Report will have more on the 2013 prospect's commitment later on Thursday.
