Rome, Heard leave the Huskers

Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelini announces two players have left the program.

LINCOLN, Neb. - For the second time in five months, Nebraska defensive tackle Chase Rome has the left this team – this time it appears permanent.

The former four-star's departure was announced by head coach Bo Pelini during his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

"It was mutual," Pelini told reporters. "We sat down, and he thought it was best that he go and play in another program, and I agreed with him."

Last September, Rome left the team for nearly a week. At the time it wasn't a forgone conclusion he would be back, with Pelini telling reporters - Rome's "personal goals and personal perception of where he should be on this football team doesn't match the team goals."

When he returned, he not only had to talk to the Nebraska coaching staff, but a group of peers as well.

"I spoke to the unity council and after that, it was just history, water under the bridge," said Rome at the time. "I brought it upon myself, but I was excited that my in-and-out everyday guys were able to move on. It's over now...You end up growing through it. It wasn't right of me, but at the same time if that's what it took to grow to where I'm at, so be it. God has a plan for everything."

Pelini also commented on the on-going situation with sophomore running back Braylon Heard, who appears likely to be transferring.

"We've still got a couple of scholarships left," Pelini reported according to the Lincoln Journal Star. "If Braylon decided, re-thought things … I think the world of Braylon. Just, right now, his mind's set in another place. I wish him luck."

Heard rushed for 348 yards on 52 carries in 2012, finding the end zone three times. A former Cardinal Mooney high school (OH) standout, the same school Pelini hails from, was expected to see his workload increase in 2013.
