Campbell Talks Ohio State Pledge

Ohio State had a big day on the recruiting front Sunday, with one commitment coming from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary running back Parris Campbell. The speedy back picked up an OSU offer and jumped on it. He talked to BuckeyeSports.com about the decision and his excitement to pledge to his home-state school.

When Parris Campbell traveled to Columbus for today's recruiting event associated with the men's basketball game vs. No. 1 Indiana, he didn't know he'd be leaving as one of three commitments the Ohio State football team picked up on the day.

But when the opportunity presented itself, Campbell wasn't going to let it slip through his fingers.

The 5-11, 170-pound running back from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary received a committable offer Sunday morning and chose to take it, joining Lancaster offensive lineman Kyle Trout and Michigan defensive end Lawrence Marshall as new pledges in the OSU class of 2014.

"I didn't even think that I was going to get offered today, but when he said those words, I could feel it inside of me," he said. "It was what I wanted so I decided the time was right. I'm very happy with the decision I made today."

Campbell, who is unrated by Scout at the moment, had picked up offers from Indiana, Michigan State and Tennessee, but the OSU offer was the one he wanted.

He told BuckeyeSports.com what it was like when that offer came from head coach Urban Meyer.

"We just got to talking and he was like, ‘Parris, we're going to offer you,' " Campbell said. "He asked me, ‘Do you have an idea where you want to go?' I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to go here.' Then he goes, ‘Oh, really?' I said yeah, then I committed.

"It's been a dream ever since I was younger, so it was kind of like a big dream come true. My grandmother, my mother, Coach Meyer and Coach Vrabel were in the room with me, and when I committed, everyone was just very happy. We all clapped. I got up, hugged my family and hugged Coach Meyer."

Campbell said he and Trout immediately started working on building what is now a five-member recruiting class, spending time talking to highly rated offensive lineman Jamarco Jones, who was also at OSU for the day. He also mentioned he'll work on his prep teammate, four-star linebacker Dante Booker.

"We were talking and we were like, we have to get this guy on board so we can get the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation," Campbell said. "And of course, I have to get my boy Dante Booker."

The speedy Campbell scored three times in SVSM's Ohio Division II championship game victory this past fall and hopes to bring that type of skill to Columbus with him.

"I think I can make the fans very happy," he said. "I have a lot of speed on the field, and a coaches always tell me my vision is very good. I see things that regular people just don't see. Also, Coach Meyer has told me that I'm a game changer. If the game needs big plays, I'm the person that can make that play at a crucial time."
