West Recruiting Notebook

A look at the latest news and notes from out West in this week's notebook...

The Scout 300 and the West

In the 2013 class, the West was home to the top quarterback in the country (Max Browne) and the top safety in the nation (Su'a Cravens).

It's déjà vu all over again.

The 2014 class once again finds the West home to the top quarterback in the country and the top safety in the land.

Palo Alto (Calif.) quarterback Keller Chryst stands atop the early quarterback rankings with this week's release of the Scout 300.

Long Beach (Calif.) Poly safety Juju Smith is the nation's top-ranked safety and is a top 10 player nationally, and an early five-star.

But Gardena (Calif.) Serra cornerback Adoree Jackson is the highest-ranked prospect in the West in the 2014 class, the #7-ranked player in the country and the #2-ranked cornerback.

In the Scout 100, California has seven prospects and Arizona has six prospects.  In all, 51 prospects from the West made the Scout 300, with California having 34, Arizona with nine, Utah with three, Washington and Nevada with two and Colorado with one.

  • A weekend after the first big 7on7 tournament in the West, the NLA Elite 7on7 in Las Vegas, the first major camp in the region will take place this weekend in Los Angeles.  The L.A. NFTC will be on Sunday at Redondo Union HS and will include a number of Scout 300 prospects.

Manny Wilkins- QB - Novato (Calif.) San Marin - 2014
Wilkins is a player we've been high on since last spring at the Oakland Elite 11 and NFTC and while he had to wait a little for his first offer, the first two came in on consecutive days.  Arizona offered the four-star and the next day, Utah State offered Wilkins, who figures to have plenty more when it's all said and done.

  • Wiggins (Colo.) center Dalton Risner, the West's top prospect at the position, committed to Kansas State.

  • Murrieta (Calif.) Vista Murrieta outside linebacker Tyler Cook got his first Pac-12 offer from Arizona and also got one from Utah State.
  • La Mirada (Calif.) tight end Tyler Luatua was offered by Auburn.
  • La Mirada (Calif.) receiver Dallis Todd got offered by Utah and Washington.
  • Canyon Country (Calif.) quarterback Cade Apsay was offered by Arizona.
  • Gardena (Calif.) Serra linebacker Dwight Williams was offered by Missouri and Kentucky.
  • Fresno (Calif.) Central running back Nick Wilson was offered by Fresno State and Washington.
  • Henderson (Nev.) Green Valley offensive tackle Tyrell Crosby was offered by Oregon State and Arizona State.
  • El Cerrito (Calif.) linebacker D.J. Calhoun was offered by California.
  • Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco linebacker Chandler Leniu was offered by Iowa State.
  • Elk Grove (Calif.) Cosumnes Oaks offensive lineman Kameron Schroeder was offered by Nevada.
  • Palmdale (Calif.) running back Demario Richard was offered by Tennessee.
  • Elk Grove (Calif.) Cosumnes Oaks receiver Alex Van Dyke was offered by Oregon State.
  • West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade athlete Donovan Lee was offered by Colorado.
  • Kentfield (Calif.) Marin Catholic quarterback Morgan Mahalak was offered by Idaho.
  • Brawley (Calif.) linebacker Donavin Buck was offered by Washington State.
  • Gardena (Calif.) Serra safety Glen Ihenacho was offered by Washington State.
  • Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove cornerback Brandon Lewis was offered by Boise State.
