Vandals Surprise Thompson
Deron Thompson's recruitment has been full of surprises over the past few weeks. First, a member of the Colorado State coaching staff happened to be at a track meet the Wichita (KS) Northwest running back was competing in. 20 minutes after seeing him for the first time, the Rams offered the explosive junior. Then last week, he received a call from assistant coach Jason Shumaker from Idaho. "Actually, I hadn't talked to them before," Thompson said of the Vandals coaching staff. "No mail or anything. They called my coach first, and I got on the phone with them. They offered me over the phone." "I don't know how they got the point of offering me. I think they saw my film and they offered." Thompson ran for 1,528 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Grizzlies in 2012, taking home All-State, All-Metro, and All-Conference honors. With early offers from Kansas State, Minnesota, and Army, the speedy RB is one of the top players in The Sunflower State. With his mind set on a program that will put the ball in his hands early in his career, Thompson is interested in learning more about Idaho. "The only thing I know, which I just found out a day or two ago, is that the new staff there has coached guys that have made it to the NFL." Because of the distance from Wichita to Moscow, Thompson said he plans to take his time before scheduling a visit to the Idaho campus. In the meantime, he plans to get as much information on the program as he can. "For Idaho, I'm not sure yet," he said with a smile. "We just started talking two days ago. I'm going to start talking to them more and start doing my research. With the coaching staff they have, and the offense they run, I don't see why not. Got to make sure that's a place I want to be."
