Wilson recaps 'crazy' summer'

Jon Wilson had an injury-shortened 2012 season and then his school went through a coaching change, so he used the summer camp circuit to try and help get his name out there.

Chelsea (Ala.) linebacker Jon Wilson can make plays in the middle of the Hornets' defense at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, and he's still hoping to sell it to major college programs heading into his final high school campaign.

To help accelerate the recruiting process, while learning at the same time, the class of 2014 talent took in nearly 20 summer camps at various schools.

"I finished all my camps this summer, I went to 18 in all," he said. "Here are all of the ones I attended in order: Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Auburn, Troy, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, JSU, Samford, Florida State, Tennessee, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and South Carolina.

"All of the schools watched me at linebacker, but I think I got the best feedback and work in at Troy, Samford, LSU and Mississippi State. They all want me to send in film during the season."

While the feedback was plentiful and better at some places over others, Wilson still didn't hear much about what he wants most - his first scholarship offer.

"No one has talked about a potential offer or anything, but I think if I have a good year, I'll have some," he said.

Either way, he took in plenty in the summer months and some of the information and tactics should carry over into the fall.

"Yeah, it's been a crazy summer," he said while laughing. "Now I'm just getting ready for the season to start."

In seven games during his junior season before suffering an injury, Wilson recorded 86 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles and 15 tackles for loss.

Chelsea opens up its 2013 season August 29 against Birmingham (Ala.) John Carroll Catholic.
