Early Interest for Belden

Avon (Ind.) class of 2015 defensive end Joe Belden talks about Sunday's Indiana visit and discusses the other schools recruiting him.

Avon High has produced several talented recruits over the last few years, including defensive linemen Montez Robinson, Elijah Daniel and Mack Duffin.

The next in that line appears to be Joe Belden, a 6'3, 225-pound rising junior, who is already receiving plenty of college interest.

"Cincinnati, I'm hearing from them, Iowa, Iowa State, Western Kentucky, Penn State, Nebraska, I'm hearing from them too and I heard a little from Notre Dame. Miami-Ohio, I talk to them because me and Mack are similar. They like guys from Avon because our coaches coach us right."

The school showing the most interest at this point is Indiana, who had Belden up for a visit on Sunday.

"They just told me that I'm one of the top guys on their board and they're impressed with the way I play, how I use my hands, my size, and versatility. If I go there, I could play outside linebacker, defensive end, they could move me around in the scheme and were just telling me I'm high on their board."

Does that mean an offer is forthcoming?

"They just want to see how I play this season. Coach Favors, Coach Patton and Coach Inge talked about my toughness, the way I play the game and they can tell I'm passionate. They're impressed with me, they're just waiting to see how I do this season before they make an offer."

If they do eventually offer, the Hoosiers would be very tough to beat for Belden.

"IU is definitely on top right now. They're making the big commitment to me right now. It's awesome there. I like the coaches and it feels like home. They start off practice with dudes dancing while stretching, they play music, it's cool. It gets me really hyped. The way they do things is really high tempo. I really like it. It's cool up there."

He also has plenty of players he knows from the Indianapolis area up there. One of them was among the players Belden thought stood out in practice.

"Darius Latham and Ryan Phillis, those two guys were really good. David Kenney looked really good too. Latham has a great motor and he was talking to me today. Antonio Allen, I talked to him. Chase Dutra and all those guys are getting reps and they told me they're about to start something big at IU. They said everything is cool there and the coaches really care about them."
