As Harvey sees it: Nebraska/UCLA thoughts

Nebraska's old demons came back to haunt them again on Saturday.

LINCOLN, Neb. -

1.) A former Blackshirt speaks. I talked with a couple former players before Saturday's contest, but my conversation with Ralph Brown stood out the most.

The former All-American and ten-year NFL veteran questioned if Nebraska is a team that is equipped to handle success – a product that must be taught. At the time, I think Brown was talking on a grander scale, but the Huskers match-up with UCLA might have been a perfect example of it.

Up 21-3 late in the second quarter, Nebraska ended the game giving up 38 unanswered points to the Bruins, losing 41-21.

I caught up with Brown after the game and continued to discuss the topic. He brought up a lot of good points.

This wasn't the first time this year we have seen a performance like this.

After a somewhat slow start on offense, the Huskers found offensive success against Wyoming, getting a sizable lead in week one. After going up 17, they shut it down - they looked satisfied.

Wyoming came back and had the game within three points, eventually only losing, 38-35.

Another comparison from Brown – the Wisconsin game in the Big Ten Championship last season.

"They rolled off six wins and started celebrating, patting each other on the back after they beat Iowa," said the former Blackshirt. "They accomplished a goal they set out for, but forgot the next step, actually winning a conference championship."

A game-day analyst now for KLKN-TV (ABC) in Lincoln, Brown says he feels continued success is learned during those high moments.

"You need to motivate your players after a win, and push them even harder," said Brown. "Maybe that's happening, maybe it's not? I was coached by Charlie McBride and he laid into us a lot, but it was during those moments where we tasted success and he pushed us forward. We enjoyed a win for a night, but were right back at it the next morning…You can't get after guys or yell at them when things are going down, it's just going to push a player even lower."

Brown has his own website: http://ralphbrownsports.com/

I would suggest checking it out a couple times this week. I have a feeling he will at least get you thinking.

2.) The snowball was back. At Big Ten Media Days, multiple Nebraska players talked about the snowball effect. It's the concept when one thing goes bad, everything goes bad on both sides of the football.

I think it hit the Huskers at times last year, and probably crept back up today.

"When things started going the other way on us, we lost a sense of what our job was. Some of the basic things that we were doing through one quarter, two quarters, two and a half quarters, we stopped doing. You have to be able to refocus and keep your composure to do your job and execute your football," said Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini.

"At times, when I looked at our guys on the sideline, I felt like it looked like they'd seen a ghost. Like I said, when that happens, someone has to step up and make a play. We needed to get the momentum turned back the other way and it didn't happen."

3.) Did the offense go conservative? I have never coached college football. The closest I have ever gotten is play calling on NCAA Football on my XBOX 360 and PS3, but it sure does seem like the play calling changed after the Huskers got a decent lead.

Maybe it was something UCLA did, but I really didn't notice much of a difference in their scheme overall.

Pelini said in his post-game press conference he had a feeling at times some of his guys were playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. I wonder if this applies also to offensive coordinator Tim Beck.

"That's the wrong way to go about it. I'd like to see our football team just turn it loose and have fun. I don't know," said Pelini.

4.) Martinez's running less. The Nebraska coaching staff says he's healthy. And maybe it's just the way defenses are playing him, but senior quarterback Taylor Martinez through three games isn't breaking the runs fans are accustomed to.

"Obviously, Tim [Beck] didn't feel that was there or we had opportunities and they took the read away," said Pelini when asked about Martinez. "When that happens, if they try and take the quarterback out of it, you've got to block them up front. You've got to make yards with the running backs. Rushing yards hasn't been our problem. I just feel like we have not been in a rhythm for three straight weeks. It's disappointing. We're gonna sit down and figure it out and get this thing turned around. I know we're capable of a lot more offensively than what we're doing."

In the past it has seemed like when Martinez has a big game on the ground, the Huskers have had a big day on the scoreboard.

By the way, the four-year starter was wearing a boot at the press conference.

5.) Nebraska can't get anything going on their first possession. For the third straight game, the Huskers were backed up close to their end zone and were forced to punt on their first possession of the game.

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez was asked earlier in the week how the offense could get off to a better start. His response was something along the lines – not start inside your ten-yard line.

I would have to agree with Martinez. The Huskers playbook gets extremely cut when they are backed up close to their goal line.

6.) What can be said about the defense? I think USA Today National College Football Writer Dan Wolken said it best.

I don't know what it is about playing in front of a national audience, but Nebraska's struggles in these so called, "big games" continues.

"We didn't play well enough up front, obviously, to be the type of football team that we were capable of being on that side of the ball," said Pelini. "We had how many drops in that game? A bunch. Those hurt you. Drops hurt you. There were some missed opportunities. Missed checks, in some situations, hurt us. Obviously, penalties hurt us in this football game. How many times defensively were we off the field on a drive? When you couple that with the missed sack toward the end of the first half. Those are big plays in a football game. In some situations, they [UCLA] made the plays and we didn't. I think two of those personal fouls were on third down."

7.) I was impressed with Avery Moss, but. I thought the sophomore did some really nice things today, including get two sacks. Of course the biggest moment of his game, and possibly career at this point, was his chase of Hundley in the second quarter.

It appeared Moss was going to sack the second-year quarterback on a critical third-down, but Hundley broke free for a 13-yard gain and a first down.

The Bruins went on to score a touchdown, narrowing the gap, 21-10. It gave UCLA much needed momentum going into halftime.

"We had an opportunity, in my opinion, to put this game away in the first half," said Pelini. "Or at least make it to where it would have been very difficult on UCLA. We didn't take advantage of that opportunity. We let them hang around, hang around, hang around and eventually, they got the momentum. We couldn't get a play. They flipped the momentum on us. We couldn't get a play. That didn't happen on our side."

8.) In college, the dorm room across from me would play drinking games while watching football. Let me first say, I wasn't drinking, I was eating. But I'm sure drinking games go on at a lot of places, I just hope no one was drinking to Nebraska's missed tackles today.

The second half was a brutal one and if Nebraska doesn't clean it up, it won't be just teams in the Top 25 they lose to.

"I don't know how many tackles we missed in that second half, but it is a lot," said Pelini. "You can't play good defense that way. We missed tackle, after tackle, after tackle in that second half. It's disappointing."

9.) Saturday's loss should drop Nebraska out of the Top 25. The Huskers haven't spent much time outside the Top 25 in the Bo Pelini era and I would imagine in two weeks will likely sneak back in.

Coming into the game, Nebraska had won four straight home match-ups with ranked teams, their last loss coming to the hands of Missouri, 52-17 in 2008, Pelini's first year.

10.) Today should make for an interesting three weeks. Nebraska plays South Dakota State next weekend and follows it up with a off week. Meaning we really won't learn anything more about this team until they face Illinois in the Big Ten opener.

Fans are upset. Talk radio, message boards, and social media is going to be on fire the next couple of days. Pelini had a message for his players about it before they left the locker room.

"It's gonna be negative. By the fans, by the media, by everybody. In times like this, we have to stick together," said Pelini. "They only people that can fix it is us and that's a challenge we have. If we worry about what people are saying on the outside, then things are going to go a bad way."

HARVEY'S QUICK HITTERS:

* If four running plays was the way you wanted to end the game, why was Martinez out there with less than two minutes to go? Wouldn't that be a perfect time for Tommy Armstrong or Ron Kellogg III. Especially considering Martinez was wearing a boot after the contest.

* UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley looked a lot slower than I remember him, but he's got such good pocket awareness. The Huskers made him look even better today, but the kid is a talent. It's amazing to think he's just a sophomore.

* Irish letdown or not, I can't believe Michigan needed an entire game to beat Akron, who's not even a quality non-BCS squad.

* Fans found the exits early. I have been covering the beat for three seasons and this was the first time I saw Nebraska get blown out at home. BRR's Shane Gilster said it best today, "when the fans start to lose interest on a regular basis, you got problems."

*How do you blow a field goal call? Thank God for instant replay.

(Stewart Photography)

* Ciante Evans was the only defensive player that went to the podium on Saturday. In the post-game hallway, four defensive players talked with the media: Josh Banderas, Nathan Gerry, Randy Gregory, and Stanley Jean-Baptiste (for less than 2 minutes). I look at that group of guys and see a lot of inexperience. But I have to wonder, are we seeing a transition already? Are guys like Banderas and Gerry stepping into leadership roles? I'm working on little sleep, so I'm probably reading too much into it.

* Imani Cross had only three carries for 19 yards on Saturday. On the season he's averaging 7.0 yards per carry, but only taken the rock 17 times. The Nebraska backfield is loaded, but I have to wonder if he starts to see more opportunities down the road.

* It's hard to celebrate anything the offense did after watching the second half, but what another solid effort from Quincy Enunwa. His two touchdowns were really nice - including his leaping effort. If you can stomach to rewatch the game, he had some nice blocks on the outside.
