Schmidt staying busy

Grant Schmidt from Sioux Falls (S.D.) Roosevelt has just started track season. The 6-foot-7 and 290-pound offensive lineman recently picked up his sixth offer and is still waiting on one from Nebraska.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) Roosevelt offensive lineman Grant Schmidt has been doing off-season, football conditioning this winter. It's helping him get ready for the fall, but before football he has track season which started earlier this week.

"I have been training," Schmidt said. "I have been throwing in track and lifting. Our track season started on Monday. We have been working indoors because it was like -20 degrees here on Monday.

"I am doing off-season conditioning as well. I have been doing track sessions and lifting sessions during the week before and after school. I have also been working out on the weekends. We will start football practices in about a month."

Schmidt wants to improve in a number of areas before his senior season. He says that he has to work on bending his knees a little more and has to really work hard on getting his upper body strength in line with other lifts.

"I really want to play lower. I also want to get my upper body stronger. I do O.K. on squats and cleans, but I have been working on getting more athletic.

"I played last year at about 280-pounds. During training I wanted to cut weight and lose some of my gut. I did that and I have been doing some pretty cool dunks. I will add some weight through muscle later and staying leaner will be good because I will be playing both ways this fall."

There was an opinion that Schmidt could have picked up an offer on a junior day visit to Nebraska earlier in February. That offer didn't come. He has wondered what's holding it up, but he says that he knows Nebraska is definitely interested.

"That is a good question," Schmidt said. "I have been down to Nebraska to visit about six times. They are my first love and the first big school to really start contacting and recruiting me. I don't know what is going on with not getting an offer, really.

"I know that Nebraska is coming here to see me in the spring. I think that they are dealing with a smaller class and want more time to evaluate me. I went to their summer camp last year and got hurt early when I pulled my hamstring running my 40-yard dash."

Schmidt is up to six offers with the latest coming just a week ago. "I have six offers as of right now. I have offers from Washington State, Utah, Cincinnati offered me about a week ago, South Dakota State and North Carolina."
