Marmol and Shildt on the Cards' Kissell Award

Oliver Marmol reacts to his selection as the Cardinals' George Kissell Award winner as does one of his mentors.

At the age of 27, Oliver Marmol may be the youngest recipient in the 19-year history of the St. Louis Cardinals' George Kissell Award. There is no doubt the skipper of the State College Spikes is deserving of the annual recognition for excellence in player development, as it is voted upon by the organization's staffers themselves.

In accepting his award, Marmol noted two individuals as having made a major impact on his growth from a released player less than four years ago to one of the most respected coaches in the Cardinals system.

"Between Mark DeJohn and Mike Shildt, those guys mentored me to the max," Marmol said. "They played a huge role in my development as a player and just as big of a role as a manager. Just in the way they go about it and prepare for their days rubbed off on how I go about my daily work."

Shildt knows what it takes to shine in a challenging role, as the 2010 winner of the Kissell Award himself. Same for DeJohn, the organization's Field Coordinator, who was honored in both 2003 and 2008. Now Double-A Springfield's manager, Shildt had much to say about Marmol, who both played and coached under him.

"He did a tremendous job," Shildt noted. "Very conscientious from day one. He has been in the organization as a player and made a seamless transition into developing and managing and has always paid attention to detail. He has gone about it the right way and appreciates what the Cardinals represent as an organization.

"He is the kind of guy that George would have appreciated working with. It was George's philosophy to bring players into the organization who understood and went about it in the right way and turned them into instructors – Pop Warner, Bryan Eversgerd, Chris Maloney…

"I can't say I was surprised. It was a well-deserved honor," Shildt said.

In the first of two audio interviews, Marmol discusses his route to the award and what is ahead.

Shildt spoke further about Kissell, the recognition and his colleague Marmol.
