Post spring Q&A: Imani Cross

Big Red Report is cleaning off the voice recorder and bringing premium members group media quotes from the spring that might not have been used.

What is your weight at this spring?
"I'm 230. I'm heavier than I was last spring. I lost all that weight and went down to 219 and what not, but I'm back to 230."

Is that what you wanted?
"Yeah, I wanted to be the best I could be at 230."

You said at the bowl game you had all these plans for training for yourself. How is that going and what are some of the things you have done to get yourself where you want to be?
"It's gone pretty well. The thing I have tried to do is focus on explosion in the weight room. "It was phase one of my plan. Phase two is spring ball. Continuing to focus on explosion. Phase three is something I'm looking forward to in May. I'm going to hit it hard in explosion and acceleration. Box jumps, plyometrics, anything that can improve my quick twitch muscles. And phase four is with the football team and Coach Dobson's program in June and July. Putting everything together."

You seem like a guy that has it all mapped out?
"It's all up here in my head. It's something that has to be done if I want even a chance to be pretty good."

You have been asked this probably before, but what was your reaction when Ameer (Abdullah) said he was coming back?
"I thought it was great. I said, let's try to go win a championship. That's all you can really think. Positivity is something that feeds me. Ameer is a positive guy and I want to be one to. I want to encourage competition. I want to encourage guys who are doing really well. I think it makes me a better player and I think I make him a better player."

How big of an opportunity has it been getting extra carries with Ameer limited this spring?
"It was a big opportunity, and I was thankful for the opportunity. I just try to take it one day at a time, one play at a time. I just try to make sure I focus on the little things and not so much looking at the big picture. I just make the picture smaller and try to get better every day."

On what he likes about the offense so far this spring…
"I think it's very similar to last year. I like everything about it. I think that our lineman did a good job today, especially in getting movement. I think that there are a variety of things that you have to look out for. It's not just one thing, it's a variety. We can do a lot of things well so now going into May we'll just try to get better on those things."

It's a different position, but Givens Price is a guy who blocks for you upfront. He comes into college at age 16 and is now making an impact a few years later this spring. Does that show you anything?
"It's incredible. He's a very mature guy. It's something you see right away, even when he comes into college. He's had to grow up fast. When I was 16, I was worried about…I don't know. Not college football. It's pretty incredible what he's done."

How much has he changed physically that you have seen?
"He's physically gotten stronger. He's filled into his body. He's definitely gained more weight, but not bad weight. He's gained some lean muscle mass."
