Williams transferred to Mansfield (TX) Timberview HS in January, after his sophomore campaign at Ft. Worth (TX) Southwest HS. He says that he is excited about his new team and the weapons he will have at his disposal. "Right now I'm learning the playbook and getting to know my teammates. We have several guys on our team that are being recruited."
One aspect that has helped with the transition, is the relationship he has built with his QB coach. "He has helped me with learning the playbook. During lunch we sit together and watch film and go over the playbook. We run an offense similar to Baylor and Texas Tech, a zone read pistol offense, so it's important that I learn and help my playmakers make plays. Spring practice will be a great time to work with my teammates."
Exposure is also something that Devin has worked on this spring. He recently competed in the Elite 11 camp and the Dallas NCTF camp. "I thought that I competed very well at both camps. I was grouped with Kyler Murray, Jarrett Stidham, and Chason Virgil. It was nice to go up against those guys to see how I stacked up, and I think I stacked up very well." As for camps this summer, Williams will take in a couple, but with 7-on-7, he is only planning to hit certain camps. "Right now I'm getting interest from Utah, Arizona State, Texas, and Baylor. Texas is coming by tomorrow, and has invited me to their invitation only QB Skills Camp in June. I will also take a visit to Arizona State to check them out, and of course will camp at Baylor," Williams said. "My coaches told me that I'm on the radar of a lot of coaches, so I don't have to go to as many camps as I usually would. With 7-on-7, I will get a lot of exposure, and with spring practice, I know there will be a ton of coaches coming by to see me. I just want to work hard and get that first offer."
Despite no offers, Williams knows that if he keeps doing what he is doing, that the offers will come. "My junior film will show a lot of my growth. Coach Lebby, from Baylor, says they like what they see from me, but would like to see the ball in my hands more." As for a decision, Williams says that he would like to take things slow and make a decision before his Senior year. "I'm planning to make a decision before my senior season, that way I can concentrate on the season and not on recruiting. I want the attention to be on my team. " BearsIllustrated will continue to follow Devin's recruitment, and will follow up during the summer to see how things are going.
