BRR offseason outlook: Special Teams

It appears the Huskers might have a kicking-battle on their hands this fall. is going to take a position-by-position look of what we learned about the Huskers from spring practices heading into the bulk of the offseason.

There might not be a position battle going into the fall of 2014 that will have more impact on possible points than the kicker spot.

Scholarship junior Mauro Bondi has been patient, waiting in the wings behind Brett Maher and Pat Smith, but could find himself passed over with incoming freshman Drew Brown's arrival.

Bondi's spring was somewhat shaky, capped off by an 18-yard missed field goal in the Red-White game.

"Overall our kicking just needs to be more consistent," said head coach Bo Pelini after the spring contest." We did a lot of fundamental training with our kickers this spring. We have a lot of field goal kicking. With the guys that we have right now, I think they are all capable, but just not consistent yet."

Drew Brown

Brown's high school career was all about consistency. The Southlake Carroll high school (TX) product set a national record for most consecutive extra points made (172) over the span of three seasons. Brown went 9-for-11 on field goals during his senior year and earned honorable-mention Class 5A all-state honors.

At punter, sophomore Sam Foltz returns with what could be one of the biggest legs in college football. Watching him punt before practices started, it was Big Red Report's opinion his leg is stronger than last season.

At long-snapper, the job is in the good hands of sophomore Gabriel Miller, who wasn't noticed by BRR this spring – that's a good thing. The only side not at this position would be linebacker Josh Banderas worked on his long-snapping skills this spring. Banderas isn't trying to steal anyone's job; he's just giving the Huskers another option if Miller was to miss time.
