Sunshine State standout Byron Cowart may end up playing his college ball on the opposite side of the country. Right now, it's the Oregon Ducks that are the favorite for the Seffner (Fla.) Armwood defensive end.
"They're still number one," Cowart said.
"When you talk about wanting to go to the next level, being fundamentally sound, you're going to be well coached and you'll be in shape. I know anywhere you go, you'll be in shape, but playing for a fast offense and you know you're going to be on the field, they're going to make sure their top defensive ends are going to be in shape to make plays."
The five-star athlete has also been building a good relationship with the Oregon defensive line coach.
"Me and (defensive line) coach (Ron) Aiken, we talk a lot. We're trying to build a good relationship," Cowart said.
Oregon leads for Cowart, but he has never visited. He'll be at The Opening at Nike Headquarters this summer, but he said it's unlikely he'll be able to see the Oregon campus on that trip because it's a bit too pricey.
"I'm going to take an official," he said.
Cowart's interest in the Ducks could mean much more than it seems. He and top defensive end, CeCe Jefferson, have both stated they're a package deal in this class. Not only that, but Cowart, Jefferson, and Ohio standout George Brown have planned to take their officials together.
"(Jefferson) does (like Oregon), we're a package deal. I don't know how they see him, you know they're hard to be recruited by. We'll see, he does like them though. George does too. We were talking and I was like, ‘It's a spread, all the do is pass the ball, it's pass blocking all day.' We all like Oregon."
Florida has looked to be the favorite for both Jefferson and Cowart for quite some time, so that Oregon visit will prove critical in their recruitments. Cowart said he'll likely visit Florida for Friday Night Lights in July. He visited Notre Dame Wednesday and told Scout he was pleasantly surprised by how much he liked it. He'll see Maryland on Thursday.
