LINCOLN, Neb. - After serving under Bo Pelini for seven seasons at Nebraska and before that at LSU, it appears outgoing Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis will be looking for a new boss this offseason.
Papuchis isn’t afraid to admit; Saturday’s Holiday Bowl could be a major milestone in his career. Without the defensive minded Pelini over his shoulder, Papuchis will solely be responsible for the Huskers defensive outcome against USC. A Trojan team that put up a lot of points in 2014.
“I look at this as an opportunity to once again go build up on the resume,” said Papuchis. “Hopefully we have a good defensive showing and that will help going forward.”
Unlike a few of the current Husker assistants, Papuchis’ hasn’t landed a job yet, but feels confident after talking to various people about the direction he’s looking to go.
“I like to think you focus on the job you got,” said Papuchis. “I guess that’s true until you don’t have one. I have been totally vested in getting prepared for this game, because I think it’s the right way to finish our time at Nebraska and it’s right for the players.
“I have four little ones to take care of and a family to think about, so I’m trying to do my best job at balancing at what’s going to come after the 27th and what is taking place right now.”
