Nebraska true freshman Carlos Davis still could play in 2015

The Nebraska staff hasn't shut the door on true freshman defensive lineman Carlos Davis playing in 2015.

Nebraska freshman Carlos Davis hasn’t played in the Huskers’ first four contests and is currently looks like a redshirt candidate. But, the former Missouri prep isn’t on the scout team and has been practicing inside the two-deep at times the last few weeks.

With a rash of injuries upfront, Nebraska defensive line coach Hank Hughes was asked if the coaching staff was considering burning the freshman’s redshirt.

“We are thinking about beating Illinois,” said Hughes. “Period.”

Hughes was asked how Davis’ has progressed after fall camp.

“He’s done good. Because of Jack’s (Gangwish) injury, we played him at end. We brought him up to learn the end position and then have been rotating from end to tackle.”

Davis made the trip to Miami with the team in week three and right now looks like an emergency opition, but the door is open slight.

“If he's absolutely better than someone else,” said defensive coordinator Mark Banker. “But we want to be smart about it and not just waste a redshirt year on a series or two, or a game or two."
