Nebraska HC Mike Riley revisits late third down call against Illinois

Nebraska head coach Mike Riley was asked again about the Huskers' late third down call against Illinois on Saturday.

Up 13-6 with under a minute left on the clock, Nebraska had a 3rd down and seven. Illinois had no timeouts and a run play would have ticked the clock down to around 10 seconds left in the game.

Nebraska called a bootleg run, with no option to pass.

Junior quarterback Tommy Armstrong did the unthinkable. He improvised. He passed.

Nebraska head coach Mike Riley was once again asked about the play on Monday during his press conference.

"I think we reiterated that it was a run," said Riley. "We called it a run and like I said, I don’t blame him, I blame myself for the training of it.  He just reacted.  He had a guy too fast in his face and just reacted like that.

"Normally that play is a pass play, it’s a bootleg pass, but we tag it when we want the quarterback to run with ‘run’.  It’s basically ‘Chill Bronco Run.’ Now we did not get in the right formation.  It was a mess.”
