Holmes says third time was a charm

Scout.com five-star 2017 ATH Darnay Holmes said his latest visit to Nebraska, his third trip, was the best one yet.

A total of three members from Calabasas high school (CA) 2017 crop of talent were in Lincoln over the weekend and it included five-star ATH Darnay Holmes.

The junior currently sports a long offer list which includes schools consisting of: Alabama, Florida State, USC, UCLA, Ohio State, Stanford, Arizona and Notre Dame.

The nation’s No. 12 overall player in the 2017 class has been to Nebraska three total times and said his latest visit, the first time he’s seen a game, was his best trip.

“Being recognized, being welcomed in as family, it was definitely great,” said Holmes. “Walking around and having fans scream your name, really shows the passion is there for the players. They know how to treat the players right. It is definitely a school I want to stay in touch with.”

The attention from Nebraska fans is something Holmes has noticed throughout the recruiting process.

“I feel how bad the fans want me,” said Holmes. “I’m not going to be one that gives the fans a lot of attention if I’m not serious about going there. They are definitely are going to be in the mix when I decide to commit. Nebraska fans should be happy because Keyshawn (Johnson Jr.), Tristan (Gebbia), and myself are all considering them. One of my best friends Marquel (Dismuke) is going there, so they definitely have a shot with me.”

But, he warned those who have hinted it might be a package deal.

“At the end of the day it’s about where each one of us fits best,” said Holmes. “We aren’t a package deal. If it’s one school, we all go to one school and enjoy it. If we fit elsewhere, we will go our separate ways. At the end of the day, we just want to all be successful.”

Calabasas is currently 6-0 on the season and face Carmarillo high school this week. They currently have four more games before the start of the playoffs.

“I honestly feel like I haven’t been playing well this season, so I’m about to step-up this weekend,” said Holmes, who according to Maxpreps.com has three pass-breakups and ten total tackles on the year. “There is going to be a different Darnay in the upcoming games.”

The ATH has also played offense this season, registering 11 catches for 412 yards according to Maxpreps. He’s also been one of the Coyotes primary kick returners.
