Nebraska puts the full-court press on JUCO DB Markell Simmons

Nebraska put a full-court press on junior college defensive back Markell Simmons on Monday night.

A few days after junior college defensive back Markell Simmons returned from an official visit to TCU, the Nebraska coaching staff made it known how important the Pima product is in the 2016. class They did on the first day of the contact period.

“They ring the doorbell and I think that it’s just going to be Coach (Mike) Riley and Coach (Mark) Banker. I open it up and Coach (Brian) Stewart and Coach (Trent) Bray were also there. It was all of them,” said Simmons. “It was fun. A full-court press.”

Simmons visited Nebraska in early November and loved the game day environment, but has taken official visits to Utah and Fort Worth since. The all-in move by the Husker coaching staff definitely got the 3 for 3 player’s attention.

“I’m definitely a priority. Coach Riley said he wanted me to know it. I really can’t say anything bad about Nebraska,” said a laughing Simmons.

“Tonight was about my family getting to know the coaches. They have had nothing but good things to say about Riley, but it was good for them to sit down with them.”

Last year multiple parents told Big Red Report head coach Mike Riley is a pro in a living room. Judging by Simmons’ comments on Monday night, the Huskers didn’t do anything to hurt themselves in the junior college product’s recruitment.

“My family and Mom loves them,” said Simmons. “My mom said it’s going to be a difficult decision, but she loves the coaches there. She thinks it’s a great staff and they know that if I go there, I will be taken care of. They really sold her on academics and life skills.”

So what is next for Simmons?

“Utah is coming on Wednesday. They won’t see my family because I will be at school,” said Simmons. “TCU is coming to Phoenix on Thursday afternoon. I will be done with school and will get there to meet them Thursday night…My mom didn’t go with me to Nebraska or TCU, so she was excited about tonight and Thursday.”

TCU head coach Gary Patterson is expected to be one of coaches from the Horned Frogs in attendance.

“I’m hoping before December 16,” said Simmons when questioned about his recruitment end date. “But to be honest Josh, it’s whenever God tells me. When he says it’s time, it will be time.”
