David Engelhaupt picks dream school and stays in Nebraska

David Engelhaupt is staying inside the state, pledging to Nebraska on Tuesday morning.

After receiving a late offer on Monday evening, Norfolk Catholic linebacker/tight end prospect David Engelhaupt has committed to Nebraska, picking the Huskers over Wyoming where he had been committed since late summer. Nebraska will use the 2016 prospect as a tight end/H-back.

"I think did (hold out hope for an offer). We are in Big Red country, so you are always hoping that it may come true," said Jeff Bellar, Norfolk Catholic head coach. "I think he was prepared to go elsewhere and wanted a scholarship, but it happened late. It's a great thing for him.

"We are happy for him. He's worked extremely hard. The Wyoming staff was great and would have been a great fit. But this is something where growing up as a little kid, he was hoping to have the opportunity to play for Nebraska."

The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder camped with Nebraska this summer, along with Iowa State and Wyoming. He also had reported offers form North Dakota, South Dakota and South Dakota State.

"David played extremely well for us," said Bellar. "He was able to be a very good offensively in terms of carrying the ball and catching it as a receiver out of the backfield. In terms of defense, he could really take a game over as an outside linebacker. He rushed the quarterback as a defensive end type as well. We tried to use him in multiple ways with his ability level and skill. He was very good for us. We will miss him."
