Another Power Five scholarship offer has found its way to Nick Smith, an explosive edge rusher out of Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips who's closing in on a dozen opportunities at the Division I level after landing Nebraska on Monday evening.
Smith, who participated in The Orlando Opening Regional over the weekend, says Nebraska is one program he has a familiarity with dating back to his sophomore campaign.
"Nebraska was one of the first schools I ever spoke with," Smith said. "I know they've produced great defensive linemen, such as Ndamukong Suh.
"After my sophomore season, they just told me to keep working hard and they'll be back in the spring. After spring, they told me they were very interested, and well, the rest is history."
This versatile defender does the majority of his damage with his hand in the dirt, but will likely shift back and find a home at outside linebacker when it's all said and done. Smith is a bouncy athlete that does a great job of utilizing his hands and shedding blocks to make a play on the football. Smith's quick first step and explosion off the line enables him to really make a living in the offensive backfield.
Smith possesses a finesse style of play and can really change direction when operating in space, but provides some nice tenacity and emotion when lacing up the cleats as well. This smooth athlete plays with discipline and does a good job of setting the edge, but it's his motor and relentless pursuit of the football that really captures my attention. I like the upside and versatility that Smith provides on defense.
