Nebraska senior I-back Terrell Newby earned his first watch list recognition, as he was one of 76 players on the Doak Walker Award Watch List released Thursday morning. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back.
A starter in eight games last season, Newby rushed for 765 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry for a total of seven touchdowns.
His 205 yards on 28 carries against South Alabama was a career high and was good enough for Big Ten Player of the Week honors in week two of the season.
After suffering an ankle injury against Purdue late in the season, Newby only carried the ball 18 times in the last four games, including just four carries UCLA in the Foster Farms Bowl.
The Nebraska RB is one of nine Big Ten running backs on the initial Doak Walker Award list.
Newby needs just 640 yards this season to become just the 29th Husker ever to run for 2,000 yards in his career.
