The heat bore down today on the NU football players as they practiced on grass, but it wasn't enough to deter them from having what Frank Solich referred to as a good practice. "They responded very well." Solich said of players practicing amidst the heat. "It was a good day for us. I (continued to) feel pleased with their attitude and work ethic.
Counting themselves amongst those practicing was DE, Trevor Johnson, who has been sidelined with a slight knee injury for the last couple of weeks, the specifics of that injury coach Solich wasn't going into.
The one downside to the practice was the official announcement that Ryan Schuler would indeed be gone for the entire season. Solich also stated that there would be an official announcement as to Schuler missing this season and it's expected that they will be more specific about the blood clot issues that are the source of this year being Schuler's official redshirt season.
The news of former QB, Garth Glissman returning to the Huskers has been all good for the staff at NU. Glissman, already having practiced with the team (helmet only) will be their scout team QB throughout the season. Solich considers his return a positive. "He is a very good throwing quarterback and he has excellent height, so he gives you a realistic picture." Solich said. "He's not Josh Fields by any stretch of the imagination, but he can give us what we are looking for, so we used him today."
Along with Glissman reporting, the rest of the team not on the final 105 was able to report likewise. Their acclimation will be somewhat slower as they will have to go through the five-step process in being able to return to full-pads. That process obviously proves itself inconvenient, but Solich stated about the timing, "It does not match up well with them practicing with us this week, but we'll look forward to them joining us in full pads next week."
Nebraska will hold it's first official press-conference of the new season tomorrow, Frank Solich and a variety of other coaches and players attending. The final depth chart will also be released and everyone will find out just how many of the new "stars" will forego their redshirt seasons.
Make sure to check back here at HC to see how our own projections of the new depth chart, both offense and defense panned out, plus we'll have interviews with coaches, players and quotes from a ton of both and get their thoughts on just what's going through their minds right now going into the last week before the real fun begins.
