West Texas RB Garrison Johnson plans trip to Nebraska

West Texas prep running back Garrison Johnson holds a Nebraska offer. On Saturday he will visit Lincoln.

Production is hard to ignore. No matter where you are playing football.

Wolfforth (Texas) Frenship high school running back Garrison Johnson doesn’t play in Dallas. He doesn’t play in Houston. But the 2019 prospect can run. Over you if he must.

Johnson, a sophomore, currently has two offers on the table – Nebraska and SMU. Schools like TCU, Arkansas Oklahoma and more are watching.

“It feels great, knowing high school football isn’t the last spot. I’m excited to play on a bigger stage,” said Johnson. “West Texas is a smaller area. There aren’t as many highly ranked athletes out here, so it does hurt my recruitment a bit. I do feel that is a reason why my recruitment hasn’t taken off.

“I appreciate the offers. It helps them both going forward. They saw me first. They felt my play was good enough my offer.”

In 2016, Johnson ran for over 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. Turn on the film and it is easy to see the yards after first contact.

Johnson will visit Nebraska this weekend for the Huskers’ annual Red-White game. It will be his first time in Lincoln after Nebraska threw a scholarship his way.

“Honestly, I love Nebraska. It is an amazing school. They are a competitive school in every sport,” said Johnson. “I’m glad they offered me. I have liked Nebraska for a while. I watched them growing up. It was always a top school for me. It was a great feeling when they offered me.

“The program is known for running backs. They are featured in their offense. They have had some major success both at the college level and in the NFL. What running back wouldn’t want to go there?”

Johnson says communication with Nebraska is constant.

“We try to talk once or twice a week. Nebraska is sort of far from Texas, so I like talking to him,” said the sophomore, when asked about Coach Davis. “It helps build the relationship and lets me learn more about Nebraska. Coach Davis is straightforward with me. He is a great man.”

While they haven’t offered yet, another school Johnson likes is TCU. The Frogs have interest in the power back.

“When I was younger I lived in Fort Worth, so I have always liked TCU. They have had some big success. TCU is an amazing school. I love the Frogs.”

The 2019 prospect went on to talk about his game.

“I’m not scared to take a hit,” said Johnson. “If I need a 4th and three - I’m going to run someone over. I don’t make a ton of cuts. I’m a north-south guy.”

And what is he looking for in a school?

“I want a school big on education. Football isn’t going to be in my life forever. The NFL might not be in my life after college. Education is big in my life,” said Johnson. “In addition, I want a strong fan base. I’m going to be there for four years. The people around you is a big part in your life. I want a place where the people are friendly and make you feel comfortable.”
