Colorado RB already with one offer

As a junior in Colorado, Maurice Greer was good enough to earn first team All-State honors, tallying an impressive 23 total touchdowns on the year and busting the 2,000 yard mark. With one offer already in hand, he's excited about what's to come as will most schools be as they watch what should be one of the top RB prospects out of the mountain state for the 2005 year.

He's not huge on stature, but what Maurice Greer lacks in overall size he makes up for in overall talent. Talent enough that when confronted with defenders in the open-field, Maurice has a variety of things he can do. "It all depends on how open the field is." he said. "I can go around them if I have the space or go through them if I need to."

That versatility got Maurice over two thousand yards rushing, but what is really impressive are the 35 touchdowns scored over his brief career, Greer stating that only two came via reception. 23 of those touchdowns rushing came this season and he's been held to under 100 yards only once in his career and that came to the eventual state champ, Ponderosa in the semi-finals.

Greer's not looking at the numbers though. In fact, he took great care in trying to talk about anything other than individual statistics. It wasn't what he said his senior season was going to be about. "I want to make myself better." he said. "But, the team getting better is what counts. How we work together to do the best we can is what matters."

What also matters to Maurice is the recruiting attention, Greer receiving his share and then some right now. With an offer already in hand from the University of Colorado, Maurice sees this as possibly the start of something special. "It was great to get the offer from Colorado." Greer stated. "It let's you know that you are doing something right, but now I just have to go out there and get better."

The better he gets, no doubt the more those letters he is getting currently turn into offers resembling that from the Buffs. Such schools that have already sent a number of letters to Greer have been UCLA, Nebraska, Michigan, Oregon, USC, Arizona State, UCLA, Missouri and most recently, Arkansas.

One has to wonder though that in spite of all the national attention, does the early written offer from the home-state team bode well for the future of the Buffs in Greer's recruiting philosophy. "At first, I was pretty excited about Colorado." he said. "But, with all that stuff that's been going on there, it's not a good situation and one my mom doesn't like at all."

Greer's mom will have a vital role in determining Maurice's future, Greer stated, but that hasn't stopped him from just taking an early stab at some teams he's looking at right now. "There's a lot of great teams out there like UCLA, Nebraska, Michigan and others that a person would be happy to play for." he said. Greer did concede though that there is one team that if they offered he would probably commit right away. "I've always liked Texas." Greer stated. "I like the way they use their backs, the kind of backs they put into the NFL and have just always been a fan."

If the Horns don't come a knocking however, is the door wide-open for this Colorado kid? "I am just concentrating right now on my school and doing what I can to make myself better before the season starts." he said. "I'm just going to let everything else kind of happen. It's not a big rush."
