Another Nebraska offer extended

Ask Jamaal Charles to do it from his running back position and it will be done. The running back from Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas. Last year as a junior he rushed for over 2,000 yards while averaging over seven yards per carry. He also scored 29 touchdowns of which 27 were on rushing attempts.

It's difficult to make a name for yourself playing scholastic sports in Texas. It's even more difficult to get really noticed playing football. It is arguable that more talent slips through the cracks in Texas than other states produce.

Jamaal Charles couldn't go unnoticed. With eye=popping numbers like he put up last year that would be close to impossible. Charles' efforts last year have yielded him nine offers already with some big names on the list.

"There's Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Arizona, Houston, Alabama, Nebraska, and Texas A&M. A&M was the first to offer me in January."

It's tough to be content with the list of offers though if your favorite hasn't offered you, yet. Charles is a Longhorn fan and the standout from Port Arthur spent the weekend in Austin for the spring game.

It was fun. They walked me through the facilities and gave me the tour. I got to meet the coaches and I watched the spring game. That was my first time touring the facilities in Austin and meeting their coaches."

"They have good coaches in Austin. They are helping you in and out of school. They have good coaches as well as good players. I spent the most time with Coach Haywood who is the running back coach."

When you ask Charles to name his favorite one name rises to the top of the list.

"I'd really like to go to Texas. My top five though would be Texas, Texas A&M, Arizona, Arkansas and Nebraska. It's not firm though. I'm still open."

Teams that are recruiting Charles are getting the "whole package" when it comes to a running back. He can catch the ball as well as run it. He isn't afraid to run you over or run past you either.

"That's my strength, speed. I run past people. I think that I run a lot like Ricky Williams. He can catch the ball, run you over and run past you. He has real quick feet. Like Barry Sanders."

Quick feet is right. Charles boasts a 4.4 second time 40-yard dash. He also ran with the Junior World Track team last year and is trying again this year. He runs a 10.5 second 100m, 21.02 second 200m, 46.25 second 400m, 13.67 110m hurdles and a 51.00 second 400m hurdles. He plans on competing in both sports in college if he can.

If that offer doesn't come from Texas, Charles says that distance will not be an issue in choosing a school. One school that has gotten his attention with their recent offer is Nebraska.

"They always have good running backs there at Nebraska. Their head coach and running back coach are from the NFL and they will help you go to the next level."

Jamaal will be at the Nike Camp May 2 in Baton Rouge at LSU.
