NU Athletic Department to Hold Equipment Sale

The University of Nebraska athletic department will hold a department sale of excess equipment and furniture in the Northwest Fieldhouse on the north end of Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to noon.<P> The sale will include items such as athletic shoes, team clothing items, posters, lockers, office systems furniture, auditorium theater seats and novelty items such as autographed footballs and HuskerVision videos.

Customers should enter through the northeast corner of the stadium near Gate 14. All sales will be final and only cash or checks will be accepted. All items must be removed the day of the sale or special arrangements must be made, as the building is scheduled to be taken down beginning on May 18.

In its Program Statement for the construction of the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex and new seats on the North side, the athletic department stated its commitment to preserving the integrity and character of the original fieldhouse design.  Built in 1945, the fieldhouse was the home of the Husker football team until 1973, when South Stadium Office Building was completed.

"We are thrilled to be able to preserve the character of the old fieldhouse," Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson said.  "We are pleased that the designs will provide a fabulous front door to Memorial Stadium.  It will be stunning and will have the look and feel of Nebraska's rich tradition and style."

In order to meet construction costs and build the new facility to code, the design build contractor determined the old fieldhouse should be rebuilt with new materials.  This enables the Performance Floor to be built on the same level as the Memorial Stadium field (Level 1), and also allows all the student-athlete service areas (strength complex, medical training room, football locker room, equipment room, nutrition and water therapy) to be on the same floor.  In addition, since the roof had to be removed, trying to save the current walls would be costly and had the potential of slowing construction.

Before the dismantling of the fieldhouse begins this month, the athletic department will make best efforts to remove any nostalgic items it is able to save.  Sampson Construction takes control of the premises on May 18 and will install a security/safety fence.  Any events held at the stadium area over the next two years will require consideration of the construction zone.

In the fall, the visiting team will be housed in a refurbished existing locker room on the south end of the East Stadium.  Nebraska will be able to continue to utilize their existing locker room on the South end of Memorial Stadium throughout the construction process.

Regular timeline updates will be provided to the media and public as they become available.  A "construction cam" will be installed this summer and fans will be able to watch the progress live on Huskers.com.
