Nebraska offer in future for CA QB?

Since 1993 there have been three commits from Oceanside, Calif. to Nebraska. In 2004/05 Nebraska has extended two offers so far and a third could be on the way.

Russell Tialavea a DL/OL from Oceanside High School and his teammate Roberto Wallace are holding Nebraska offers. The Cornhuskers are also closely evaluating the quarterback at Oceanside as well.

Derek Shaw is a 6-foot-3.5 and 205 pound quarterback that last year threw for over 2,200 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He averaged 19 yards per completion and earned second team all-league and county honors last season.

Although Nebraska has yet to offer there are 14 other teams that have stepped up to offer Shaw. "Colorado, Michigan State, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Washington State, Miami (OH), Virginia, UTEP, Florida, Oregon State, Alabama, Boise State, and Purdue," Shaw said.

"I have 14 total including Purdue which is a verbal. Oregon State is the latest team to offer me."

Oceanside runs a spread offense and Shaw's strengths really shine in that setting. "I stay in the pocket real well and keep my eyes downfield. It's always a last resort to run. I'm a pro-style quarterback. I have a quick delivery and a strong arm. I can read defenses pretty well.

Shaw knows what he is looking for in a school and he is looking for the best. "I want to see how comfortable I am there. The attention and the offers are kind of overwhelming. I'm really thankful. I want to go where I get the most playing time, best education, good climate and a god coaching staff."

Although Shaw says that he hasn't heard directly from Nebraska his coach had some information to tell him about The Cornhuskers.

"Coach Carroll said they're going to offer. He told me that three to four weeks ago. He said that they're planning on sending the paperwork."

"Lincoln is a real college town. They love their football there. They have a new head coach and he's going to throw the football."

Coach Bill Busch is recruiting the San Diego area for Nebraska so he has been recruiting the Oceanside kids. "Coach Busch is seeing how my arm is. I hurt my arm and he is waiting to see how it is before offering. I have started throwing again. The doctor told me that it was nothing, but it was popping. I had it scoped to fix it. The surgery was three to four weeks ago and I am throwing again already. I feel a lot better now."

Right now Shaw is in a 'wait and see' mode about the Nebraska offer. Nebraska has his video and they are evaluating him. "I'm going to wait and see if Nebraska calls. I'll probably try and call them."

If Nebraska offers Shaw there is a good chance that Nebraska will get an official from him and his two teammates.
