Huskers a favorite for Jeremy Mayfield?

Last year the Huskers hit big with Aleks Maric. This year the Nebraska coaching staff has already landed some big-time playmakers in the backcourt in Jamel White and Will Harris. Thus attention seems to have turned towards the frontcourt and Texas big man Jeremy Mayfield fits the bill.

Mayfield's AAU coach told me on Sunday night that Jeremy should actually be listed at 6'10 ½" instead of the 6'9 theinsiders' database has him listed at and 225 pounds. That combined with Jeremy's athleticism for a big man would make him the perfect compliment to Maric and the others that Nebraska will have in the frontcourt for the 2005/06 season. Last season Mayfield averaged double figures in both points and rebounds for Irving MaCarthur and should improve upon those numbers this season.

While he does have that great size, he also likes to step out and face the basket. According to scouts he runs the floor well, can handle the ball good for a big man and can even sink the mid range jump shot. That skill set seems to be the perfect match inside to compliment Aleks Maric in the post for the Huskers.

According to AAU Coach Craig Roberts Mayfield will in fact be visiting Nebraska the weekend of October 29th. He also has visits lined up for Kansas State and Nevada. Arkansas had been scheduled for one as well but they are no longer being considered. When asked if he has a leader right now Coach Roberts responded "Nebraska along with Kansas State would be there right now followed by Nevada. Miami is in it as well."

Thus far it seems like the Huskers have to be considered to be in great shape to land the frontcourt prospect. "Nebraska was one of the first programs to start recruiting Jeremy. They were down here around January where as a lot of the other programs didn't come around for a couple months after. Some of those were big time programs, but Nebraska was there first," Roberts said. "Jeremy really likes the coaching staff and he thinks he could fit in well with the other players they are getting."

Last season's class, which was very highly rated among many of the recruiting experts, was credited in large part to the outstanding job of the entire coaching staff but in particular to one assistant; Scott Spinelli. Coach Spinelli (along with coach Novsek) once again is to be credited in recruiting another potential Husker. He is the assistant who has been handling the recruitment of Mayfield. According to Coach Roberts "Jeremy has gone through a lot of adversity so he is kind of a quiet kid sometimes, but he really opened up to Coach Spinelli. In fact he was here just last week going over Jeremy's transcript and things."

With NU already having four verbal commitments for this class Mayfield would be a nice addition to a team that will lose gritty forward John Turek after this season. With that in mind, this is definitely one player to keep track of over the next few weeks and months. If he were to sign this fall, then it would appear that the Huskers class would be complete for the 2005 high school class. The signing period begins in mid-November for the fall.
