Huskers Earn Pair of Shutouts at Nebraska Duals

The No. 3 Nebraska wrestling team earned a pair of shutouts at the Nebraska Duals Saturday at the NU Coliseum. The Huskers, one of five teams competing in the event, defeated Findlay 43-0 and Wyoming 42-0. This marked the second year NU notched a pair of shutouts at the Nebraska Duals. Last year, Nebraska shut out Nebraska-Kearney 46-0 and Chadron State 43-0.

"Individually, our guys tried to do different things than normal in their matches," said Head Coach Mark Manning. "These matches are an opportunity for us to get the mentality to go out there and dominate."

Overall, the Huskers earned 12 bonus-point victories. Leading the way was 157-pound wrestler B.J. Wright, who won both of his matches by fall. He pinned Findlay's Angelo Vettese at the end of the second period of their match, and defeated Dan Clum of Wyoming by fall 4:40 into their match. Travis Pascoe was the only other Husker with a pair of bonus point wins, both by major decision. Pascoe, despite wrestling one weight class above his normal 184 pounds, defeated Clint Salisbury of Findlay, 21-8. He then dropped back down to 184 to beat Samuel Wedland of Wyoming, 18-6.

Six Nebraska wrestlers in all earned a pair of wins. Dominick Moyer won both of his matches at 133 pounds. He earned a bonus point with his major decision victory over Adam Uhl of Findlay, 13-2. He followed that up with an 8-2 victory over Tyson Shatto of Wyoming. Chris Nedens won a pair of matches, the first in dramatic fashion, as he earned an escape with 54 seconds left in his match with Findlay's Tony Guerra to tie the match at seven. His 1:31 advantage in riding time clinched the 8-7 win. Riding time was also key in Nedens' second victory, as he rode Wyoming's Patrick Shuler the duration of the second period, then escaped from Shuler early in the third period. With a 1:39 advantage in riding time, Nedens won, 2-0. Marc Harwood also earned a pair of wins at 174 pounds. His first came in a dominating 13-7 performance against Dave Weinady of Findlay. His second, against Wyoming, came by forfeit. Dusty Spaulding earned a pair of wins by forfeit at 141 pounds.

Overall, the Huskers are now 7-0 on the 2004-05 season. Their next action comes Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at the NU Coliseum against ninth-ranked Minnesota.

Fifth-ranked Iowa State also dominated two opponents at Saturday's duals, defeating Findlay, 42-4 and Dana 47-0. The Huskers will take on the Cyclones in NU's last regular-season dual match Feb. 19 at the Bob Devaney Center Track at 6 p.m.
