Joe McCray named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week

Freshman Joe McCray was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the Big 12 announced Monday. McCray is only the second Husker – and first NU freshman – to earn conference rookie of the week honors more than once in a season since the formation of the Big 12 in 1996-97, joining Kimani Ffriend who earned the award three times in 1999-2000.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., McCray scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting while helping Nebraska to a 71-49 victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday. McCray scored 18 of his points after the intermission, when he hit six three-pointers, including five consecutive in one stretch. McCray added a career-high seven rebounds as the Huskers improved to 4-3 on the season.

Joe McCray is only the fourth Husker with at least three 20-point games in a season, joining Jerry Fort (6), Dave Hoppen (5) and Eric Piatkowski (3). McCray currently leads the Huskers with 14.0 points per game while adding 5.0 rebounds per contest.

The Huskers are back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 21, when they play at Marquette. The Huskers and Golden Eagles will tip off at 8 p.m. and the game can be seen on FSN Midwest or Rocky Mountain in the state of Nebraska, and on DirecTV and Dish Network. The contest can also be heard on the Pinnacle Sports Network and Huskers.com.
