The huggable, loveable coach brings a tough Red Raiders in, but it's Knight that has everyone aroused this day. One fan compared this (if you can believe it) to watching Mike Tyson. "It's like watching shock video or something like that" they stated. "Most people say they are disgusted with the way he does things, the headlines he makes, but everyone still wants to be there to watch his team, because they want to see what crazy thing he does next".
Crazy? Bob Knight? Through his last few years at Indiana, much might have been said of the legendary coach. Through one NCAA tournament disappointment after another, it was only his antics that brought people to the house as his teams were falling far short of squads he fielded in his earlier years. The 3 national titles Knight has won puts him in some very select company, but much like Tyson, it's not necessarily the wins they remember, but the character behind the record. Of course, when the victories are there, your craziness is described as "eccentricity" , but when you are losing, people just think you're nuts.
Crazy or Crazy like a Fox, Knight has the Red Raiders rolling. A team picked to finish near the cellar of the conference, Knight has Tech amongst the leaders. Taking a team nobody figured to cause anyone to break a sweat, The General now has opponent perspiring, wondering what it will take to stop them. Amongst the Big XII, only Tech has three players averaging better than 15 pts. Per game.
Does Knight deserve all the credit though? Most would agree that he does, as before Knight's arrival, the Tech basketball program was going nowhere fast, while now it realistically has a chance to contend not just for a conference tournament title, but for the regular season title. That says a lot.
Knight has been at the helm almost 30 years and in those 30 years, he has created champions, but more than his share of controversy. From allegedly choking players, picking fights with reporters or simply being his usually "calm" self, Knight draws on-lookers like a car-wreck in an intersection. They say they hate him, they say they are disgusted by some of the things he does and some even say that he isn't that good of a coach.
Love him or hate him, Knight has Tech where nobody thought they would be, at least right now and now, he's coming to Lincoln. Don't worry about your reputation though if someone asks if you lowered yourself to the point of actually going to Devaney to see The General in action. Just tell them it was a car-wreck. They will understand.
