Huskers, Sooners and Illini offer top DE

The past two weeks have led to Lincoln and Norman for this standout defensive end. On the back-end of each one of those visits has been an offer. Not too shabby. Don't ever think that a little networking never paid off for anyone. For this prospect, it is only the beginning with another possible junior day this week and camps coming up.

Persistence and taking the unofficial visits are paying off for St. Louis (Mo.) Vashon defensive end/tight end Jerry Brown. The 6-foot-5 and 270 pound prospect has been called one walking muscle by some, but in the end that only compliments him being a pretty good football player.

Brown has that size at 270 pounds that would put him in a position to play early in his college career. He also carries it well sporting a 4.8/40 time. As a junior Jerry tallied 78 tackles (30 solo), nine for a loss, 12 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

That is why the interest is picking up about Brown who, maybe up to last weekend, was a hidden gem. Right now, the word is getting around quick and he has picked up 3 offers this week alone.

"Oh yeah, I got an offer from Oklahoma and Nebraska. Today I just got an offer from Illinois," Brown said. "Right now I have five. I have one from Missouri and Michigan State as well."

That's not all, when asked about schools that might be close to offering there was one that Brown admits is very, very close. "I would say Kansas State is close to offering me right now."

The spring has been busy for Brown who has already been to Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. That is just where it starts though and he has a couple of busy weeks ahead. "I went to a Junior Day in Missouri, Nebraska and just got back from a Junior Day in Oklahoma."

"I want to go to the Junior Day at Kansas State on April 30 and I want to go to the Scout U.S. Army All-American Bowl camp at Illinois on the 23rd, but I don't know if I will be able to make it. That is the same weekend of the Illinois spring game. I also want to go to the Nike Combine on May 7 at Kansas State."

The Nebraska offer followed an early Junior Day in April. While there isn't any plans right now to get back to Lincoln this summer there are tentative plans to get there this fall. "I was up at Nebraska for a Junior Day, but I would like to take an official visit there too this fall."

Talking about favorites and schools that Brown has interest in before this interview has been a bit complicated and sometimes misunderstood. There has been a tendency to leave off the home-state team, but after having some time to think about it he is seeing things a bit more differently now.

"I was telling all of the other reporters that Missouri wasn't really on my list, but I was just thinking about it today and it is the five schools that offered me that are my favorites. I can't keep on putting Missouri out because they are the one of the schools giving me the most interest. I really don't have anything against Missouri. I kind of want to go out of state, but above all I want to go Division I and play football, that's it."

While this spring has been busy taking in some trips and planning camps, he has also had to fit in track, weightlifting and now flag football.

"Right now I am in a weightlifting schedule. It is kind of hard with track practice and flag-football practice just started. I am trying to get stronger and get my speed up by running track. I am going to play some tight end this year. I am going to still play defense, but I want to play a little tight end too."

While Nebraska remains a team in his top five, he had some specific comments about the Cornhuskers. "I liked it; before I went to Oklahoma that was the only school where I got to talk to the players."

"Every school that I have gone to I liked, but I really liked talking to their players, their stadium, the facilities and I wouldn't mind going to school there. They are definitely a school that I am considering for an official this fall."
