Newer Student Of The Game Offered By Nebraska

Eyeing some of the nation's top defensive tackle prospects and all-around big men, Nebraska continues to dip into the theme of stacking the line up front with talented athletes that can play at numerous positions. The Cornhuskers appear to have identified another prospect out of California that could play such a role for the Big Red.

De'Shon Matthews has only played the game of organized football for three years and is a bit undersized, but as his coach mentions, his upside is as huge as Matthews himself could one day become.  He stands 6' 5" and currently weighs in at 253 pounds   During his junior campaign, he had 81 tackles, 14 tackles for loss along with six sacks, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt for good measure.

He was named to the First Team All-Delta League and currently holds offers from Nebraska, Arizona and Washington State.  He also expresses interest in Oregon State and Fresno State.  His current favorites in USC and California haven't offered him yet, but if he puts on some more mass and has another stellar year, you could see several offers coming his way.  He plans to camp at Fresno State and cites his strengths as his physical strength, agility and quickness.

De'Shon admittedly doesn't know a whole lot about the University of Nebraska, but the fact that they came out and offered him so early has earned them a shot in his eyes.  "I don't really know much but I'm interested.  They've offered me this early and they have an ex-NFL coach," he said of his reasons for being interested.

Matthews ran through a few of the big factors that will go into his eventual decision with me as well.  "They have to have a good football program and academic program," he said.  De'Shon is looking to major in architecture, so a good program will help a school with their chances for him.  Matthews also mentioned that and location and weather do play into his decision.  He mentioned that Nebraska is not too far, but he is a bit adverse to playing in snow.

Matthews reports that Nebraska has been sending him both informational and handwritten letters.  "They're interested in having me to come down to watch a game or practice or go to the camp," he said.  He has already visited USC and California taking in practices.  If he had to make the choices for his official visits today he would go to Nebraska, Arizona, Washington State, Texas and UCLA.  We will continue to cover De'Shon as his recruiting heats up.
