Eight days before the season opener and the coaching staff feels very comfortable with how prepared the team is. "As far as attitude and the way our kids are playing, I am very pleased," Cosgrove said.
Cory McKeon is still winning the battle for the starting middle linebacker position but Phillip Dilliard isn't going to make it easy according to Cosgrove. "He is improving everyday and I expect him to play versus Maine."
Position battles will continue throughout the next week and the coaching staff will sit down as a group to make the depth chart. "We'll finalize all those decisions, with all positions next week," Cosgrove noted.
Some might question what would lead to a better defense for the Huskers in 2005 after losing three key starters to the NFL. Cosgrove says that answer is obvious. "We are playing a lot faster than we ever have here."
Team chemistry has been a hot topic among fans and the media during spring and fall camp. It appears the consensus is the team and the coaching staff are on the same page. No doubt is going through the mind of Cosgrove on whether teammates have shown emotion this fall. "Absolutely, if somebody makes a big play, there are guys celebrating."
Cosgrove gave encouraging remarks toward newly aquainted captain Daniel Bullocks. "He is playing his best football right now."
What has to be done between now and the Maine game then, if the coaching staff is so confident? "We need to work in situational football." Cosgrove saying he expects the team to focus on red zone situations.
