Solich Offers Tommy Zbikowski

Tommy Zbikowski made the trek from Illinois to Lincoln on April 20th for the Husker spring game. Zbikowski left a happy young man and he also left with a scholarship offer. Will the young man who's being compared to Eric Crouch commit early?

Tommy Zbikowski, a 6-foot, 185-pound, dual-threat quarterback from Buffalo Grove, Illinois grew up on Notre Dame football but the present tradition of Nebraska may win out over the past tradition of Notre Dame in the running for his services.

Zbikowski attended the Nebraska spring game on April 20th and was given the red carpet treatment by the Husker coaching staff and before he left Lincoln Head Coach Frank Solich offered a scholarship.

Zbikowski is being compared to former Husker Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. The comparison with Crouch is actually very fair. Zbikowski is lighting quick, he can throw the ball, he's tough and he's a gamer.

Nebraska had Zbikowksi high on their list but what made them offer a scholarship wasn't what he did on the football field but what he did in the boxing ring.

"Coach (Frank) Solich saw film of Tommy boxing and he offered a scholarship." Said Ed Zbikowski, the father of Tommy Zbikowski.

"I think when people think of young kids boxing, they think just get in the ring and slug it out. Nebraska saw Tommy's footwork and speed. Tommy's an Olympic level type boxer.

"Coach Solich told us that Tommy is exactly the type of quarterback that his offensive lineman would love to block for."

Nebraska put on a show for the Zbikowski family and they came away extremely impressed.

"The coaches showed Tommy every machine in the weight room. Turner Gill asked Tommy about different defensive coverages and what his reads would be during certain plays.

"Nebraska is a top notch program. They've been to 33 straight bowl games and the support from the fans of not only the football program but the school in general is tremendous." Ed Zbikowski said.

Although only 16 years old, Tommy Zbikowski is very level headed and mature. He sees everything very clearly. He knows who's putting on a show and he knows who's being sincere concerning his recruitment.

Zbikowski is a competitor. He's not going to every college campus demanding to play quarterback. If it were up to him, he'd just play football and at any position. However, he's not afraid to tell any coach that if he's the best quarterback on the team, that's where he should play.

Does Nebraska have the inside track for Zbikowski's services? I think it's too early to tell. I know Tommy likes Northwestern a lot. Notre Dame is his childhood favorite but are the Irish a good fit? Illinois, Iowa and Bowling Green have also offered.

Nebraska assistant coach Turner Gill will be at Zbikowski's school today as will coaches from Purdue, Maryland and Colorado.

Zbikowski has five scholarship offers and more are sure to come his way during May. Tommy and his family went to the Illinois and Notre Dame spring games this past weekend.
