The No 1-ranked Huskers (33-1) defeated Santa Clara (27-5) in the national semifinals Thursday evening to advance to the championship match against No. 3 Washington, which is scheduled to air on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Huskies reached their first NCAA finals match with a three-set sweep of Tennessee Thursday evening. UW won the PAC-10 Conference this season and owns a 31-1 record.
NU previously won NCAA championships in 1995 and 2000, while also reaching the title match in 1986 and 1989.
With the win against Santa Clara, Nebraska has tied Florida and Ohio for the Division I lead in wins with 33. Of NU's 33 wins, 12 have been against ranked teams. With a win over Washington, the Huskers would finish the season with a 34-1 mark to lead all Division I programs in wins and finish as only the third team in NCAA history to lead the AVCA poll the entire season. UCLA (1992) and USC (2003) are the only other teams to have accomplished the feat.
