Kelsey Griffin Earns First Big 12 Honor

Nebraska freshman Kelsey Griffin claimed the first Big 12 Conference weekly award of her career, earning Big 12 Rookie-of-the-Week honors on Monday, Jan. 9.

The 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game in the first two Big 12 contests of her career last week. Griffin helped the Huskers stop a 21-game losing streak to Colorado in Boulder with 12 points and nine rebounds in her Big 12 debut, before adding 16 points and seven boards in NU's 73-61 win over previously unbeaten Kansas on Saturday in Lincoln. The Huskers stretched their winning streak to eight games with the win over the 12-0 Jayhawks.

On the week, Griffin hit nearly 65 percent of her shots from the field and 75 percent of her free throw attempts to help the Huskers start the Big 12 season with a 2-0 record for the second straight year. Griffin ranks among the top freshmen in the Big 12 in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Nebraska joins Missouri and Oklahoma as the only three remaining unbeaten teams in Big 12 action. The Huskers face Missouri in Lincoln on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7:05 p.m.

The Tigers earned their first Associated Press Top 25 ranking since Dec. 30, 1984, debuting in the poll at No. 24 on Monday afternoon. Missouri returns five seasoned starters from last year's club, including Big 12 Conference Player-of-the-Week LaToya Bond. The 5-7 guard averaged 20.5 points and hit 14-of-23 shots from the field in MU wins over defending national champion Baylor and Kansas State last week.

Bond scored 21 points and played the full 40 minutes in the Tigers' win over the No. 4 Lady Bears, ending Baylor's 30-game winning streak with a 64-61 victory in Columbia. She added 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field in just 27 minutes in MU's runaway win over Kansas State in Columbia on Saturday.

Bond, who has scored 20 or more points on six occasions this season, helped Missouri extend its winning streak to 11 games before coming to Lincoln. She is averaging 18.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
