Callahan and Watson Meet With Media

Head Coach Bill Callahan met with the media on Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium to introduce new tight ends coach Shawn Watson.

Shawn Watson was hired earlier this week to join the Husker staff, and comes to Nebraska after serving for the past seven seasons on the Colorado coaching staff, including the past six years as offensive coordinator. Callahan and Watson were first associated while working on the same coaching staff at Illinois in the early 1980s.

In addition to introducing the newest member of his coaching staff, Callahan also briefly touched on a number of topics during Friday's meeting with the media. Callahan announced that Husker players will begin their winter conditioning program on Wednesday, Jan. 18, and Nebraska will hold the first of its 15 spring practices on Wednesday, March 22. Nebraska will cap its spring practice session with the Red-White Game on Saturday, April 15, with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m.

Head Coach Bill Callahan on Shawn Watson

"I have known Shawn for over 25 years, going back to the University of Illinois where we both started our careers. He is an outstanding individual and an excellent coach who will contribute to our staff significantly of the offensive side of the ball. He has great expertise and knowledge and a good background in the style of system that we use here. He is a really welcome addition to what we are trying to accomplish offensively. Besides that, he is an excellent person and an outstanding recruiter. We are looking forward to having Shawn with us for a long time here at Nebraska."

"I choose to come to Nebraska for two reasons, mainly. One was my relationship with Bill, and the opportunity to learn more about the West Coast offense from him, and secondly, was the tradition here at Nebraska. It is one of the top jobs in the country and it is a very special place. I've had a chance to experience it from the other side of the field and I think that Nebraska is one of the great places of college football in the country."
