Getting To Know: Mike Smith

You wouldn't think that Mike Smith was as big as he is talking to him on the phone. Then you see Smith's film and you see a big man who can run and who's athletic and you really wouldn't think that you were talking to the same guy. That is just his laid back style off the field, but on the field Mike is all business. Here is Mike Smith, one on one.

Official Visit Date: October 28, Oklahoma game

Enjoyed the most on official visit: "Just meeting all of the players and having everyone be so nice to me. I enjoyed the atmosphere and being catered to was nice. I had someone there with me and they would just take me anywhere I wanted to go."

"I definitely wanted a chance to talk to the players and the coaches more than I did in the spring. I just wanted to meet them and see how everything works. See what they had to say about the program. It was pretty intense there that weekend."

Biggest factor in choosing Nebraska: "The academics. It was because they had more academic all-Americans than any other school. That is just a great accomplishment and you can't beat it. As long as I know that I am going to get my education too."

"I was definitely surprised with the amount of academic all-Americans, but the academic support is amazing. I don't know how anyone fails! It has to be impossible."

Other schools considered: UNLV, Oregon State and Cal

What are you looking forward to the most when it comes to getting to Nebraska: "Just getting my career started. Getting into the weight room and getting bigger and stronger. Just being around the team and bonding with all of the players."

"I am leaving here June 1 for Lincoln. I don't think that I will be able to make the spring game this year though. We have a vacation planned to Cabo and we already paid for our tickets. I am pretty upset about it. It's not like I have to get there to get on the field or so the coaches are going to like me more."

"I know that I will be living with Seth Jensen. He's cool. He knows everything about everything. He is always asking catches and calling people. He's like, I don't know. He's funny. I think that he is going to be good for me because I am a little more laid back. He's always getting information and everything is fun. I think that will be good for me and help me a lot."

Funny recruiting story: "We got lost when we were going to Oregon State. I don't know how that happened. The school is in the littlest town called Corvallis. It wasn't even on the map. We had to ask six gas stations on how to get there to finally get there. We drove there. It was the longest drive of my life."

Number desired: "Is anyone "92"? That is my favorite. Reggie White was my favorite player, ever. I guess that it was good for him that he wore it and that it can be good for me. I just like the way that he played the game and I would like to model myself after him."

Message to Husker Nation: "I'd say that I am really nervous right now and that I just want to thank you guys for being supportive of me, friendly to me and warm. Thank you for welcoming me to Lincoln with open arms. I appreciate that."
