Gorsett Powers Huskers to 11-1 Victory

Luke Gorsett became the first Husker to hit for the cycle since 1995, while All-American Joba Chamberlain fanned 11 over seven shutout innings, as No. 4 Nebraska routed Notre Dame, 11-1, at the Dairy Queen Classic in the Metrodome on Friday.

Luke Gorsett went 4-for-5 with a single in the first, a homer in the third and a double in the fourth before completing the cycle with a triple to left center in the eighth, as he slid in to beat the relay throw at third. It marked the first cycle for a Husker player since Mel Motley accomplished the feat against Nebraska-Kearney on May 11, 1995.

"He's hot right now, that's a good sign," Anderson said, focusing on his fourth inning homer to left center. "When its 3-1, your sitting fastball and for him to have that balance and the power to wait (on the off-speed pitch), it's pretty impressive."

Gorsett, who drove in three runs and scored three times, has now homered in three of his last four games and is hitting.429 with team-highs in both homers (four) and RBIs (10).

Gorsett's performance nearly overshadowed another dominant performance from Chamberlain, who silenced Notre Dame's offense attack, holding the Fighting Irish (2-3) to just three singles.  Chamberlain, who improved to 2-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.29, struck out 11 in an 89-pitch gem. He retired the first 11 hitters he faced, including seven strikeouts, as the right-hander from Lincoln posted his second straight double-digit strikeout performance.

The Huskers pounded out 17 hits against four Irish pitchers, including three by center fielder Bryce Nimmo, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and two each by Nick Jaros, Andy Gerch and Jeff Christy as NU build a 9-0 cushion after four innings.

"Joba was very good today," Anderson said. "After we took a 3-0 lead, we were able to take some chances offensively because he had Joba on the hill and team's aren't going to score a lot of runs. We were able to consistently apply pressure and create some opportunities offensively."

Gorsett got the Huskers started in the first, as his two-out single scored Nimmo to give the Huskers a 1-0 lead. Consecutive singles by Nimmo and Jaros put runners on first and second just two batters into the game. Nimmo moved to third on Ryan Wehrle's double play and scored moments later, as Gorsett singled deep in the hole at short and beating shortstop Greg Lopez's throw to first.

Nebraska used four hits, including RBI singles from Christy and Nimmo, to extend the margin to 3-0 in the second off the Notre Dame starter. Gerch opened the frame with a double past third before coming home as Christy bounced a single over the mound into center. After stealing second, Christy then scored from second on Nimmo's grounder between the pitcher's mound and first.

In the third, NU chased the Irish starter Tom Thornton, scoring four times to make it 7-0, as Thorton (1-1) allowed seven runs on 10 hits over 2.1 innings. Gorsett opened the frame with his fourth homer of the season, a solo blast to left center. The Huskers then loaded the bases on a double by Brandon Buckman, a single by Gerch and a walk to Christy before Jake Opitz's slow roller plated another run. Jake Mort then greeted reliever Jess Stewart with a safety squeeze before Nimmo's third hit of the afternoon made it 7-0.

The Huskers tacked on two more runs in the fourth, as an RBI double by Gorsett and a sacrifice fly by Gerch, before Nick Sullivan's seventh-inning sacrifice fly gave NU a 10-run cushion.

While Alex Nettey's eighth-inning RBI single broke up NU's bid for a shutout, but the Huskers got the run back in the bottom of the frame, as Gorsett tripled and scored on Andrew Brown's RBI single.

The Huskers continue play at the Dairy Queen Classic Saturday afternoon, as they take on the Arizona Wildcats. First pitch is set for Noon (central) and the game will be carried on selected Pinnacle Sports Network stations and on Huskers.com. The game will also be shown on HuskersNside.
