Huge tackle in East Texas

Last year's crop of offensive line recruits for Nebraska was impressive, but you just can't seem to have enough offensive tackles. Typically, teams are an injury or two away and depth at that position needs to develop. Nebraska looks to take another tackle this season and could be looking at a huge tackle from Tyler, Texas.

Marquis Franklin is a big man. At 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds he still covers the 40 in 5.2 seconds. He has been playing the offensive tackle position at Tyler (Texas) John Tyler since his sophomore year. He is just enjoying his time right now.

"School is going alright," Franklin said. "I am just trying to take it easy right now and enjoy my junior year."

Last year, John Tyler had a great run that was ended in the first round of the playoffs. Beyond that though, Franklin showed unbelievable pain tolerance, strength and determination.

"We went 8-2. We went to the first round of the playoffs to Garland. My season went alright. I tore my ACL, sat out a game and then I played through it. I just had to get it repaired. I am going through rehab now."

Despite suffering the completely torn ACL and playing on it he was able to earn second team all-district and first team all-East Texas honors as a junior. He played solely at the offensive tackle position last year, but could see some time on the other side of the ball this year.

"Coach is going to throw me in a little at defensive tackle. I haven't played defensive tackle since tenth grade. I am going to be starting at offensive tackle and this year I might have, but since the ACL he just shut me down."

When Franklin lists his strengths, it's obvious what he will say first: size. He is a road grader of a lineman that seems destined to play tackle in college. "My height and my size. It's also my strength. I am better at run-blocking. When they run right behind me it's a guaranteed six. In college I want to play offensive tackle."

Most of the Big 12 South is keeping tabs on Franklin while two of them have already ponied up offers. "Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas, Iowa, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. I get a lot of letter saying that they are going to come up and take a look at me in the spring. I have offers from Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Nebraska has sent me a couple of things."

Franklin and Kendall Hunter will be heading to camps together this summer. While they plan to hit a couple of local camps, they are also eyeing a camp on the west coast. "We are going to spend the night at Texas for a camp then we are going to Texas A&M for a camp. We went to A&M last season. We are going to Washington, flying up there, to take a camp there."

Franklin did mention that he was receiving a little mail from Nebraska at that time. He also did mention that he knew someone that was at Nebraska right now. "I know Cody Glenn that went up there. He's a running back. He's out of Rusk, Texas. I don't know a lot more about them."
