Interest picking up for Heiman

When we last spoke to Steve Heiman he had made a big change in his life. His head coach at Omaha (Nebr.) Gross was let go and he decided to move onto Papillion-LaVista to pick up the pieces. We spoke to him about playing baseball again and he also mentioned a possible position change. Is that still in the works?

Steve Heiman is fitting right in at Papillion-LaVista (Nebr.) after leaving Omaha Gross at semester. A standout in both football and baseball, he finds himself smack dab in another sport already. But, he has some activities coming up for the other sport.

"I am in baseball right now," Heiman said. "So I am just doing my class. I am planning on going to the combine in Iowa City in April. I have already signed up for that one."

The last time that Big Red Report spoke to Heiman he mentioned possibly playing running back or safety. Well, he did mention those position changes, but not for him. It seems that his days at Papillion-LaVista will have him lining up under center.

"I think what I said you earlier was misspoken. John Reiss was originally a running back and a free safety so that is where John is going to play next year, probably, and I will be at quarterback. That is the way it is right now."

It's obvious that Steve is looking forward to the upcoming year. He knows what type of offense that Papillion-LaVista runs and has heard from his coach how it fits his style.

"I know as far as the coach has told me, he said that this offense at Papillion will showcase my abilities. That's because they throw the ball 70-80% of the game. I know that they do a lot of quick-in stuff and throw a lot of deeper balls. A lot of that is my strengths."

Besides the combine he has his eyes on going to the Nike combine. He is also looking at some camps that he hit last year as well as going to a Big 10 school's quarterback camp. He also has plans to get to Lincoln a few times in the coming months.

"I am going to the Nike combine, the one at Ohio State, one of the weekends in April. I just received a letter today from Ohio State asking me to come to that camp. My coach spoke to Ohio State and they said that they have been reviewing my film."

"I am going to the EA Sports Elite 11 again this year. That is down at Texas A&M this year. Then I am going to the Purdue Quarterback camp this summer and of course the Nebraska quarterback camp again. I can't remember, but I think that there is one more combine."

"I know that Nebraska invited me down for their junior day and that may be what I am thinking of. They invited me to the spring game as well, but that is two weekends later. I want to go to Lincoln to see the atmosphere. I just want to get a vibe from the players and the coaches."

Since the departure of Scott Downing, the coach that has Heiman's area is Coach Dennis Wagner. Coach Wagner has been keeping close tabs on Heiman so far, but Steve has recently been receiving attention from another coach at Nebraska.

"Coach Norvell and Coach Wagner are sending me handwritten letters. Those are the main two right now. I know that they are looking for big things for me this year and that they are looking forward to working with me again this summer. That is all that they have been saying so far."

Since last talking with Steve he mentioned that he is getting a lot more interest recently. He hasn't picked up his first offer yet, but it is clear that if he has a repeat performance at any combine, like he did at the Nike combine last year, that one could arrive anytime.

"I know that Vanderbilt called and asked my coach for some film on me. I know that Iowa State is picking up interest in me know. Kansas State has been giving me handwritten letters. Iowa just sent me a letter last week saying that I was on their top prospects board for next season. No offers yet, but a lot of new contacts."
