Huskers Bounce Back for 9-1 Victory

Redshirt freshman Tim Radmacher pitched five shutout innings, while Jeff Christy, Ryan Wehrle and Luke Gorsett all homered, as No. 3 Nebraska bounced back to defeat Northern Colorado, 9-1, at Hawks Field on Wednesday afternoon

Radmacher (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, scattering two hits over five innings and striking out six while five Husker hurlers held UNC to five hits, as the Huskers improved to 18-4 heading into a weekend series at Kansas State.

Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson was pleased after Radmacher's second career start.

"He had good enough stuff to only give up a few hits," Anderson said. "Tim is still working on getting stuff in the zone but he obviously proved he has good enough stuff for them not to make contact and do some of those things. I was just impressed with him, and he'll hopefully continue to get better and better.

The Husker offense helped Radmacher, capitalizing on three Bear miscues to take a 5-0 lead after three innings. NU scored two unearned runs in the first, including an RBI single by Nick Sullivan, before Wehrle's RBI double made it 3-0 one inning later.

Werhle led Nebraska's 12-hit attack with a career-high four hits and driving in three runs, including his third homer of the year, while Sullivan and Christy had two hits apiece and combined to drive in four runs.

The Huskers extended the lead in the third, as Sullivan's RBI double plated Brandon Buckman, who led off the inning with a walk. Sullivan was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple, but NU added another run on Christy's third homer of the season, a solo shot to left, to make it 5-0.

Anderson said the Huskers' showed good focus in bouncing back after two straight losses.

"This is a lot of things to learn from the last two days, including just playing to a certain level of intensity that we want all the time," Anderson said. Even in a 9-1 game there are still some things we can learn, almost just as much today as yesterday. They came out and took care of business early in the game which was great to see."

The Huskers put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring four times and chasing UNC starter Seth Gilleland, who allowed seven runs on eight hits in five-plus innings of work.

With runners on the corners and no outs, Jake Mort's safety squeeze plated one run before Wehrle made it 8-0 two batters later with a two-run shot to left. Gorsett then capped the scoring his Big 12 leading 10th round tripper of the year, a solo blast that not only cleared the outfield fence, but also the ballpark fence that is located nearly 100 feet beyond the outfield fence.

Northern Colorado averted a shutout in the seventh, getting an RBI single from Devin Warner, while no Bear had more than one hit in the loss.

The Huskers return to Big 12 play this weekend, as they head to Kansas State for a key conference series. First pitch is set for Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network.
