Husker Comeback Falls Short in 6-2 Loss

Carson Kainer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Kyle McCulloch allowed one run over seven innings, as No. 5 Texas snapped fourth-ranked Nebraska's 12-game win streak with a 6-2 victory in front of a crowd of 5,881 at Disch-Falk Field Friday evening.

With the win, the Longhorns (28-13, 13-2) increased their lead in the Big 12 race over the second-place Huskers, while handing NU (30-6, 10-3) its first setback since March 31. The 12-game win streak was the second-longest win streak in the country.

Kainer did most of most of the damage early on, driving in three of the Longhorns' first four runs, as UT capitalized on four walks by NU starter Joba Chamberlain, plating three runs in jumping to a 5-0 lead.

That was more than enough for McCulloch, as he held the Huskers, who lead the Big 12 with a .320 average in league play, in check for most of the night. The right-hander scattered seven hits and fanned four, upping his record to 6-4.

"He did a great job tonight for them and that was the story of the game," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said. ".He kept us off-balance all night, and that was one of the few times I've seen that from us this year."

The Huskers fought back in the ninth, putting together a two-out rally that got the tying runner of the plate. With two outs and Nick Jaros on second, Jake Mort's single put runners on the corners before pinch-hitter Andrew Brown coaxed a walk from Longhorn closer Austin Wood to load the base. Jeff Christy made it 6-2, chasing Wood with an RBI single to right. Adrian Alaniz, who was scheduled to start on Saturday, was summoned out of the pen and got Ryan Wehrle to pop out to end the game to earn his fifth save.

The Huskers out-hit Texas, 10-9, as Jaros, Mort, Christy and Nick Sullivan all had two hits apiece. Jaros scored both Husker runs, while Mort's sixth-inning double accounted for the Huskers' other tally.

Chance Wheeless put the Longhorns up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly. Nick Peoples opened the game with a single before a Drew Stubbs walk put runners on first and second with no outs.
Kainer moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Wheeless lofted a fly ball to left to score Peoples.

Texas took advantage of some wildness by Chamberlain in the third on Kainer's two-run double that put the Longhorns up 3-0. After a leadoff walk to Clay Van Hook, Peoples moved Van Hook into scoring position with a groundout. Van Hook stole third before Stubbs coaxed a walk to put runners on the corners. Stubbs then stole second and scored moments later, as Kainer laced a 1-0 pitch into the corner in left

Kainer struck again in the fifth, driving in Van Hook for the Longhorns' fourth run with a two-out single that was just beyond the outstretched glove of Wehrle. Van Hook, who had two hits and scored twice, opened the frame with a walk before a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position.  Texas then made it 5-0 one inning later on Chais Fuller's RBI single,

Chamberlain (5-3) struck out seven over six innings of work, but walked four and allowed five runs on six hits to see his two-game win streak snapped.

With one out, NU got consecutive singles by Jaros and Sullivan before Mort ripped a double past third, scoring Jaros with the first run. The Huskers could not continue the rally, as Bryce Nimmo struck out before Christy flew out to left to end the inning.

Texas got the run back in their half of the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by Brett Lewis before the Husker rally fell short in the ninth.

The series continues Saturday afternoon, as the two teams will play beginning at 2 p.m. The game will be carried across the nation on Fox Sports Net (check local listings for broadcast availability). Fans can also listen to the game across the state on the Pinnacle Sports Network, on the Internet at Huskers.com and on SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
