Huskers Pull out Win over No. 9 Longhorns

In another epic battle between Texas and Nebraska, No. 1 Nebraska remained unbeaten with a with a 27-30, 30-22, 22-30, 30-22, 15-13 victory over No. 9 Texas in front of a crowd of 3,822 at Gregory Gym Wednesday evening.

Sarah Pavan totaled 22 kills, including six on 10 kills in the decisive game five, lifting the Huskers to 18-0 overall and 10-0 in the Big 12, one game ahead of Oklahoma. NU remains one of two unbeaten in college volleyball this season.

Pavan was one of three Huskers in double figures in kills, while all six primary attackers totaled at least seven kills in the win, handing UT its first home Big 12 loss in nearly two seasons. Tracy  Stalls and Jordan Larson had 13 kills apiece, as Larson totaled her 10th straight double-double, while Stalls hit .417 and added three blocks.

NU needed a team effort to overcome a superb performance from Texas outside hitter Destinee Hooker, who totaled a match-high 24 kills on .538 hitting, as the teams battled to five games for the third straight year in Austin.

In game one, the Longhorns used a 5-1 sport to close out a 30-27 victory. The combination of Jennifer Todd and Destinee Hooker did most of the damage of UT, combining for 14 kills on 18 swings as UT out-hit the Huskers, .292-.205.  The Huskers found themselves in a hole early on, as Texas jumped to a 9-4 lead to force an early timeout. Nebraska trailed 16-13, but roared back, scoring five of the next six points to take an 18-17 lead on a Larson block. The ‘Horns would fight right back, scoring four unanswered points to take a 21-18lead on a Heather Kisner kill to force NU to spend its last timeout. Larson then sparked NU with a kill and an ace to pull the Huskers within a point.  NU would fight back and take the lead at 25-24 on a Pavan kill and led 26-25 before Todd took over. The Longhorn middle blocker totaled three kills for Texas' final five points, including the go-ahead kill that put UT up 27-26.

The Huskers fought back in game two, out-hitting Texas, .273-.171, in a 30-22 victory. Pavan, who had just two kills in the opener, recorded five kills in game two to lead a balanced attack.  Nebraska got off to the quick start, running off five straight points, capped by a Stalls overpass to take 7-2 lead. Texas roared back with an 8-3 run of its own to tie the score at 10-all on a Dariam Acevedo kill. The teams were tied at 11-all, but Texas was unable to take the lead, as a Cooper kill and a UT hitting error quickly gave NU a two-point lead.  The Huskers lead 16-15 before a Stalls kill and a Cooper block extended the margin to 18-15. Texas eventually whittled the lead to 18-16, but Holloway's setter dump and a service ace quickly made it five-point lead and forced UT into its second timeout UT got within 24-20, but the Huskers ran off four straight points, taking a 28-20 lead on a triple block to send the match to the locker room tied at one

In game three, Texas turned in an impressive performance, hitting .378 as a team in posting a 30-22 victory to take a 2-1 lead. The Huskers were held to just .114 hitting, as Texas pulled away to become the first team to take game three from NU this season.  Leading 13-11, Texas used a 7-2 run to take a 20-14 lead after consecutive hitting errors by the Huskers. NU fought back, using a 6-3 run of its own to get within 23-20 after a Texas hitting error. That would be as close as NU would get, as Texas closed the game with a 7-3 flourish.

Nebraska would send the match to a decisive fifth game, holding Texas to .086 hitting in a 30-22 victory. The Huskers once again got off to a roaring start, scoring seven of the first eight points of the game, taking a 7-1 lead after a two-hit violation on Texas. The Longhorns got within four points, at 11-7, but the Huskers seemingly took control, with a 5-1 run, taking a 16-8 lead on a Dani Mancuso kill. NU eventually pushed the lead to 21-11 on a Pavan kill, but Texas would storm back. The Longhorns got to within 23-20 and forced NU's second timeout, but a Cooper kill and a Longhorn hitting error got the lead back up to five points and ended UT's best opportunity to end the match in four games.

In game five, the teams traded points until the switch, when the Huskers took an 8-7 lead on a stuff by Cooper. Pavan then put the Huskers up 9-7 with a thunderous kill that forced a Texas timeout. NU led 10-7, but Texas would come back with three quick points, tying the score at 10-all on a Larson hitting error. The Longhorns took an 11-10 lead on an Engle kill, but Nebraska fought back. Pavan tied the match with a kill before Holloway's kill gave NU a 12-11 lead. Mancuso and Cooper then combined on a stuff to put NU within two points of victory and force the Longhorns to use their second timeout. The teams traded errors before Hooker pulled Texas within a point at 14-13. That would be Texas' final point of the night, as Stalls slammed home match point, to keep NU's perfect season in tact.

The Huskers return home to take on Missouri next Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m.  The match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskers.com, while the match will also be shown on FSN Midwest.
