Huskers Hammer Mean Green

Nebraska used a strong first five minutes and never looked back in notching a big win over North Texas 76-57.

Nebraska had to make a quick turnaround tonight against the Mean Green of North Texas. Just two days after its last contest, the Huskers faced probably its toughest opponent so far this season.

North Texas came into town with a 5-1 record and were averaging 81.5 points a game. Athletically, the Mean Green were better than any team NU has played against.

That didn't matter as the Huskers jumped on the Mean Green early and scored the first 12 points of the game. North Texas finally stopped the run with their first field goal and score of the game at the 15:51 mark to cut the lead to 12-2.

"I had great concern coming into this game. I really felt from looking at the game tape of North Texas that this would be the best team we would play at this point," said NU head coach Doc Sadler. They are so big on the wings and are so athletic. I felt we had to jump on them early as they (North Texas) have been getting off to great starts."

Salder was happy with the intensity his team showed that first five minutes of the game.

"Our intensity was tremendous. This is the best first five minutes we have played this season," said Sadler.

Sadler became more pleased as Nebraska gradually increased that ten point led to as many as 23 points in the first half. The Huskers did so with a tough defense that created 15 turnovers and turned them into 15 points.

The NU defense also limited North Texas to shoot only 27 percent from the field while the Husker offense shot 52 percent.

The Huskers had to feel good at half-time with a solid first half and led 42-23.

Nebraska center Aleks Maric dominated in the middle by almost posting a double-double in the first half of play with 15 points and nine rebounds.

"Our offense and defense is flowing right now. We know how each other plays." said Maric.

The second half was again dominated by Nebraska as they increased their lead to a game high 28 points at 65-37 with 9:41 left in the game.

NU head coach Doc Sadler, subbed with around four minutes left in the game allowing the Mean Green to close the gap.

For the game, Maric recorded a double-double with 26 points and eleven rebounds.

The Huskers finished with another solid performance in the forcing turnovers, as North Texas had 25 on the night.

The final score of 76-57 pushed the Huskers to 5-0 and now look to their first road game of the season at Rutgers on December 2nd.
