Huskers expecting spring game visitor

The 2007 class has closed for Nebraska and one of the biggest needs from last year carries into this year: a game-breaking tight end. Nebraska might have identified one very early in the process and is expecting to have him in attendance for the spring game. It doesn't hurt Nebraska's chances that he is friends with a future Husker.

It's time to start giving the seniors-to-be the attention that they deserve. That is the case of Andrew Jones of Smithville (Mo.). He has really been receiving recruiting interest for about two years, but recently things have heated up.

"Yeah, it's been getting a little busy lately," Jones said. "Some teams are getting around to talking to me since signing day is over."

High schools in Missouri don't have a spring practice, but there are still reasons for college coaches to come in and see players in Missouri. Jones has been seeing the coaches at a different sport practice.

"A lot of the coaches have been coming into basketball practice. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas State, Kansas and Clemson have all been by to see me."

Jones is nearly into double-digit offers. He has been picking them up from Big 12, Big 10, ACC and SEC teams. He actually had his first verbal offer as a sophomore in high school.

"I am up to eight offers. I have offers from Clemson, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt and Kansas."

"Missouri was the first to offer me. They offered me verbally as a sophomore. Oklahoma and Kansas both gave me verbal offers over the summer and stuff. They sent them to me in September."

At 6-foot-6 and 225-pounds, Jones is a nice, big target at the tight end position. More than that though, you add 4.8-speed to the mix of things and you have a real home run threat at tight end.

"My hands. I think that I have really good hands. From playing basketball, I think of a pass kind of like going up to get a rebound. I just go up and get it. I think that running routes is a strength too, especially with smaller or slower guys are on me."

Spring and summer plans are being made already being made by Jones. He knows about two spring games that he will be attending. Jones won't be heading alone to one of the spring games.

"I know that I am going to a couple of spring games. The one at Oklahoma is the end of April and the one at Nebraska is April 14."

"I think that I am going to Lincoln with Blake Lawrence. We know eachother from football and stuff. In combines we went up against eachother and we really just started talking after that."

This won't be Jones' first trip to Lincoln. He was up there as an unofficial visitor last season. He really enjoyed the game last season.

"I was up there before. I was there for the spring game. It was crazy. All of the fans seemed packed in there. The stadium seems to go straight up and down."

"It was pretty nuts. It was like a record crowd or something for that game. I thought it was awesome. My cousin's mom has a box up there. I have some relatives in Omaha."
